  • Me 2. The S2 is all i desire.
Looked into rooting the thing. Looks complicated. Is it worth it?
(I suppose I can only get rid of the samsung bloatware if I root it)

Well the fact it'll get rid of all the bloatware is a good thing, so long as there's none of the Samsung apps you rely on?

It'll speed it up, you also have the option to underclock the processor thus getting much better battery life.

I noticed once I rooted my HTC desire I was able to underclock the processor and it was still faster than stock due to none of the sense ui.

  • Had a go on a friends one x that was rooted yesterday. With Cynaogen 10. Blimey It's fast.

Think I'm going to do the same with my S2 when I get a chance, it really does breathe new life in to a phone.

    read about the speed improvement on the (slow-to-startup) Goog Nexus 7 tablet from rooting it, so gonna give the rooting a go on that;

i'm hoping for lightening-fast (Ubuntu) style start-up times apres, :-)

  • Nexus 7 ver2 rumour mill is picking up speed, anticipated July release, possibly with minimal fuss over its release (since it was ignored at I/O)
I'm hoping it comes soon, itching to get a tablet, but loath to buy a soon-to-be-obsolete one.

  • 2 weeks left to find a replacement for Google Reader and Google Listen (Android podcast consumer based on the Reader backend).

I know Slashdot currently has a poll on replacements for the RSS part of it, but I'd like a podcast app which wasn't tied to particular hosting, so I don't want to use a soundcloud app for all the soundcloud hosted ones if I can use an RSS reader to automatically download the MP3s from each different feed/host.

  • I've been using Podcastaddict (or something like that) as a replacement for listen. Not nearly as simple and straight forward, but it's the best of a bad bunch, imo. You can import subscriptions in a few different formats maybe? I just used my old reader exported thingy and it worked fine.

  • soon-to-be-obsolete

Really? i think you have fallen into the tech bloggers product life cycle where anything more than 6 months old is "showing it's age". I saw the Nexus 4 described as that a week or 2 ago.

  • ^^^ Feedly?

  • Feedly syncs with Greader nicely if you log in with google account, all your feeds and folders come across

  • Am considering feedly for the reading part, it scores quite highly in the /. poll, but I don't know of a feedly-based podcast app yet.

I was being glib, what I was erring towards was, to drop the cash on a machine that will be superceded in a couple of months seems silly, I might as well wait the 6weeks or so and buy the new one.
I appreciate there will always be a 'new one' in the near future.
I am waiting on the version 2 (1080p FTW)

  • Any rumors on the new nexus 7 then? My sister was thinking of buying one but if it's better for her to wait...

  • @Emyr - Been using feedly since google announced the greader switch off. I find it pretty good actually. Like the view options, and all my setting greader came across without any problems.

    I've been using

    https://www.commafeed.com

It's not perfect, but it's pretty close to google reader

  • sods law... just glass or a full screen ? wonder how much postage would be

Full screen, digitiser and all. It's been through the washing machine but works fine. The motherboard's dead but I've swapped all the parts around with another S3 and everything apart from the motherboard works great.

  • how much would you want for it ?

Popular opinion is a July launch (1 year after the original)

hmmm - i wonder if - like me - once you've actually got one you hardly ever use it!

(and when you do - all the notifications have already been seen on your phone!)

so far, with the Nexus 7 that's been my experience, so glad it was sub-£200

    ..but maybe once its rooted....

me too - think it all transferred fine,

  • ..but maybe once its rooted....

frook - was gonna go for it tonight, but, looks like a bit more time and many steps are needed

(the official CM wiki instructions seem to be lacking the Dummies-level how-to!)

  • or just go here and pick an easy rooting method

Seriously, first stop for any Android qu like this should be XDA

  • XDA is like here for phones, but less shit, but without all the shit.

  • I know in the old days 3 Sims were in some way tied to the device that they were sold with and wouldn't work in other phones, might be worth asking them?

Looks like you are right. Googling found one thread.

Meh. 3 don't let you use your sim in other devices from say a phone to a tablet and you require data sim or something.

  • Was on the tube the other day and I saw a poster for this Asus Padphone.

The interesting thing is that its Intel based and is only £180. For the light phone heavy data users this might be an good option.

  • Have any of you tried out everything.me home screen? It's the best launcher I've used for a long time.

I have seen the ad on FB. How is it compared to Nova? I may try it out but generally prefer to wait for feedback on forums.
