  • All US citizens are required to pay tax to the US treasury, even if they are not resident in the USA. FATCA is a grotesque and over reaching piece of legislation that is supposed to stop US citizens hiding acorns overseas....

Now the penalties to a bank for not compiling with FATCA are obscene and if its a choice of losing your business or being non compliant under FATCA - they will drop you like a stone.

I suspect the reason they think you might be a reportable person is because they don't know your citizenship - if they knew they could allocate you to one of the buckets -reportable or non-reportable but in the absence of any information you are just a regulatory risk to the bank.

  • I seem to remember Boris being pursued for US tax a few years back as he was a US citizen from many years back.

  • I wouldn't have been able to open an account without providing it in the first place

Depends when you opened the account. I provided nothing but a name and address to open my bank account, but then my opening deposit was £2.10/- :)

  • so, a nice wide rimmed (>23mm o-o) wheelset, campagnolo freehub, black rim.
will be used on a dolan multi x with wide (cross)tires. bit of pootling around in the woods and daily streetwarrior. im now in a fat-ish state of 85 kg, must keep from cake and beers.

    options:

    -dt-swiss r24 (460gr rims), 20/24, new, 190+60 euros for the freehub = 250. recoup 25 (veloce hub) + 30(?) freehub = 195 euros.

-dt-swiss r460 (460gr) to veloce rear (used), novatec (new) front 28/32, handbuilt, 145 euro total cost (have hub/spokes already)

-touring rims (25,5mm o-o) (600gr) to veloce rear (used), novatec (new) front 28/32, handbuilt, 115 euro total cost (have hub/spokes already)

-used campagnolo zondas, 80,-. not wide. but cheap and complete. recoup 25,- veloce rear = 55 total cost.

    -did i miss something?

    so predicaments:

    factory 20/24 over handbuilt 28/32-32/32.

460gr rims over 600 gr rims.

as cheap as possible because i will be hashtagfunemployed from october.

many thanks in advance for your infinite wisdom!

  • did i miss something?

Fulcrum Racing 7/5/Quattro LG meet your general requirements. There is a road wheel recommendations thread where all of your options have been discussed at length.

  • I'm trying to find a flask like this (a cup on either end, about a litre capacity) for sale in the UK and coming up blank. Anyone any suggestions?

  • I'm trying to find a flask like this

Does it have to be that Zippo 2-compartment one, or are you just looking for 1 compartment and two cups, e.g.
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Isosteel-VA-9562DQ-Vacuum-Insulated-Quickstop-Single-Hand/dp/B0007VKRBY/

  • No, doesn't have to be Zippo. Just what I was looking for, cheers.

  • Anyone know what happened to Lumen Junkies?

Has anyone replaced them in terms of selling [affordable, rebuildable] bright lighting?

  • How do you feel about the KMC 510? Also an anti rust chain shouldn't rust.

  • How do you feel about the KMC 510? Also an anti rust chain

The basic Z510 doesn't have any serious corrosion resistance. The Z510RB does, but it's hard to find. All Z chains are bushingless, which is an inferior method of assembly suited only to dérailleur chain where the flexibility is a benefit. KMC B1RB (or 410PRB) is the equivalent of Wippermann 1Z1, but it's also hard to find UK stock, and shipping makes it more expensive than the Wippermann chain if you order from the continent.

  • Has anyone tried any Babici clothing?

Love some of the designs and it looks to be good quality but without purchasing from Australia there's no clear indication if the product warrants the hefty price tag.

  • And the ultra lol is that US citizens can end up paying both US tax AND local taxes in some circumstances.

If it's to stop money hiding rich ones, they are probably smarter than this. They can pay for the experts to avoid this.

(but the US at least attempts to fight this, see also the whole Apple kerfuffle in ROI, treasury is waiting for money to go onshore so they can tax Apple, Apple no want to pay and keeps money offshore but they will have to bring it one at some point, very slow popcorn popping)

  • And the ultra lol is that US citizens can end up paying both US tax AND local taxes in some circumstances.

US citizens have to pay US tax on their earnings wherever they are in the world but they get 1-for-1 credit for any local tax paid. So if your local tax bill is less than the US tax bill you owe the rest to the US. If your local tax bill is the same or more than the US tax bill then you don't pay anything to the US. Even the US doesn't do double taxation.

(I should really look into the tax I paid when I worked in the US, I'm probably due some of it back but it was a long time ago...)

(but the US at least attempts to fight this, see also the whole Apple kerfuffle in ROI, treasury is waiting for money to go onshore so they can tax Apple, Apple no want to pay and keeps money offshore but they will have to bring it one at some point, very slow popcorn popping)

Apple will never bring it onshore in the ROI as long as the overriding EU tax rules make it not worth it. If anything, Apple (and many many other corps) are waiting for another reduced rate US tax amnesty so they can get it into the US although they don't really need to; they can do all of their R&D and M&A on loaned money with the offshore stuff as guarantor and available to bring chunks of it in tax-free to pay the interest on the loans.

  • Ah, I see. A USA mate said he ended up paying extra tax, but perhaps he didn't know the rules well enough.

There are no overriding EU corporation tax rules: ROI set their own, much lower corporation tax, which is OK, but they let only Apple get away with paying much less than that (Starbucks did the same in NL, they also got in trouble)

What tax rule would stop Apple bring cash in?

  • There are no overriding EU corporation tax rules: ROI set their own, much lower corporation tax, which is OK, but they let only Apple get away with paying much less than that (Starbucks did the same in NL, they also got in trouble)

I meant the rules that stop them being given a special deal.

Apple getting their money into ROI doesn't help them. If it ever needs to be anywhere other than offshore then it needs to be in the US. Going through another country en route to the US is only going to cost them more. They're going to wait until they can go direct or just keep it offshore and borrowing against it there.

  • Yep, fair enough.

  • Not tried any myself but I could pop into their store down here and check it out if you'd like? Always need a reason to look at new bike stuff. I'll be near there next week if you can wait.

  • Anyone know the difference between planet x's rt-90 and rt-80?

And does anyone have one? Tempted by one secondhand, they look like the fm066 frame which got good reviews on here I think

  • Absolutely not in a rush, just trying to justify spending £120 on a jersey without knowing what it's like!

I'd very much appreciate an opinion

  • help me remember boyzandgirlz. more rake = more trail = slower steering right?

I'm experimenting with n-1 to end up with n=n and putting mudguards on the njs. more rake with road fork would mean less toe overlap with more clearance for bigger tyres. also, less aggressive geometry for easier road riding?

also, whats the solution for allen key brake fitting and mudguard "eye" (its too small for the bolt).
drill? theres also a problem saver innit? I solved it back then with a nut conversion set for my tektro brake but now the drop is too big, also for the other road fork I have lying around. also, ild like to keep the da 7410 brake on it to keep the japanese theme.

I would search if my search fu was a bit better with microcosm but it justIisnt working on mobile. many thanks in advance.

  • There's a great bicycle trail calculator on the interwebs if you wanna experiment. Low trail means steering feels 'quicker', high trail feels generally more stable but there's lots of articles on that too if you wanna read up

    I'm an idiot.
so more rake = less trail = twitchier steering. very counterintuitive.

fuck it I'll just put the other fork on and see what it does. shit is though, that it needs thread cut which is $. and it is actually a shit fork. just noticed it even has less a-c then the fork thats in there now (some kona thing, believe its 35mm rake). maybe search for a different fork then anyway.

  • Might as well get one of those nice Bankiren 1inch disc forks ® 😀
