  • Serious cash. You can get Fulcrum Race 0 duals for less than that.

  • But would they be better than hand-built Tune Mig/Mag hubs to Kinlin rims?

  • Does the spoke profile make a big difference?

Define 'big'. It's well worth having on race wheels, completely irrelevant otherwise. Could make the difference between time bands in a sportive, but if you care that much you should be racing, not pretending.

  • Well, not entirely if you are using the same spokes.

    *Gets coat.

    i dont get it..

I have to beat a man to the top of a mountain this summer, he is approximately 20kg lighter than me, and likes suffering (this last information gleaned from his choice of friends*)

Will aero spokes make it easier to beat him? If yes then I'm all over that shit, if no then I care not a tittle or jot.

    *Only joking

  • But would they be better than hand-built Tune Mig/Mag hubs to Kinlin rims?

I have them, but not the Migs. All I can say is they are awsome wheels. Light and tough as hell. Mine are just clinchers, the duals would be to kill for.

And the spokes are aero, though that will make sod all difference for climbing.

  • Will aero spokes make it easier to beat him?

Yes, but how close does the race have to be? On a pure climbing race, they might make the difference between you half wheeling him in the finishing sprint or vice versa

  • If I beat him by the thickness of a rizla paper then that is still 100% beaten.

  • Are all integrated headsets the same?

I'm thinking about putting new forks on my condor pista, and I'm 99% sure it's got a fully integrated HS. In which case are they all a standard size, or is there a risk that some will be funny sizes due to the head tube diameter?

Also is there one that someone would recomend at a sensible price point?

The unconvincing guy on the phone at Condor said integrated and it was £23 - which seemed good value.

  • the duals would be to kill for.

If you could get decent tubeless tyres.

If we're after £700 boxed wheels, the WH-7850-C24-CL would be my first choice, under 1400g and with better aerodynamics than either Fulcrum Zero or hand built 28-spoke Kinlins.

  • Are all integrated headsets the same?

No, there are two main standards for fully integrated, Cane Creek and Campagnolo. The chamfer angles are different.

I would not be surprised if my maths had gone wrong, but I had my theoretical build at approx £500, what have I missed that adds £200 on?

You can - just not in the UK. Order from abroad.

I'm on the out jury on those. Joining carbon to Al rims etc. Fulcrums are bomb-proof. And not Shimano of course.

  • @ mdcc_tester - as always, thanks a lot.

Which tubeless tyre is competitive in performance (weight, rolling resistance) with the best tyre and tube set ups?

I've got RS80s - same rims and spokes with Ultegra level hubs. No complaints here.

  • what have I missed that adds £200 on?

I was suggesting an alternative to the Fulcrums (Fulcra?)

  • Dunno.

Longevity would be my concern, combined with being rattled silly on crap roads. Just seems another complication to cause problems for no great benefit. But then I am a simple fellow.

  • Just seems another complication to cause problems for no great benefit.

The benefit is a ~380g clincher rim which has an aluminium brake track and is stiff enough to be ridable with 16/20 spokes even for fat blokes like me. For those benefits, and given that I paid <£300 for my RS80s, I'm happy to take a punt of longevity.

  • So that's what - about 1/3 of a water bottle?

  • If you're paying £900 for water bottles, you need to shop around more.

  • What other wheels should I consider?

  • If you're paying £900 for water bottles, you need to shop around more.

Ha! They were BOGOF actually! So who's looking like Mr Stupid NOW then eh?

  • What other wheels should I consider?

Merkin Classics would be nice on that build.

  • With your budget, and with the emphasis on weight, you're on the right track with Tune/Kinlin. There might be hub options from M5, Extralite etc., or you could go pre-built RAR Tempo at 1370g claimed, or even Hed Ardennes at about the same weight, but they are both a bit more expensive.

  • What other wheels should I consider?

I've just laced up a 700c clincher which is in the ball park for weight - 1607g

    For just the rear wheel!
