  • 120mm QR Reba from PX - close enough?

  • Is there a way to convert a Shimano Saint front hub (FH-M800) with 20mm*110mm thru axle to a standard 9mm*100mm front axle with 5mm quick release?

  • FH-M800

You mean HB-M800, and no. The bearing units screw into the hubshell in a freaky way which precludes an economic modification.

  • Thanks. looking at the technical drawings from shimano I thought as much.
A bodge would be to file some mms off the axle tube and plug it with some other brands 20mm to 9mm converters.
But I'd probably die riding it.

  • To do it properly, you'd have to dismantle the bearing units and turn 5mm off each in a lathe. Plus a bit to clear the dropouts, since the fat stub probably wouldn't fit a QR fork. Far more trouble than it's worth.

  • Mhhm, no lathe, no tool for the bearing units...
    XT it is.

  • Cycling into work this mornign my bike started makign a worrying clicking (then later grinding) noise from what I thought mgh be the bottom bracket. Popped by the brilliant Brixton Cycles who spotted some loose chainring bolts, loos crank arm and then a loose handlebar clamp.

This looked like it had sorted it but then later in my journey it started making the same noise again. I appreciate it's hard to diagnose issues over the internet but but what sort of thing could it be?

I took a look at the bike at the weekend and saw nothign out of the ordinary. Is there anything I should check before going back to BC and asking them to look inside. It sounds to me like it's coming fom the bottom bracket but know noises can travel a fair bit.

  • I'm not that old...

(But I'll ask them to take a look at that too)

  • @olaf_von_pokemon if you had been riding on it loose for a while it could have buggered the chainring holes, the chainring bolts or the taper on the crankset, if so when it's tightened up it feels good at first but it's now like a square peg in a round hole and doesn't take as long to work loose.

  • My rear fixed wheel has developed some play which doesn't seem to be resolvable with cone adjustment, the adjustment nuts are proper tight. Assuming that means bearings need replacing, does anyone know if this info for Gran Compe hubs is accurate, specifically the 6000-2RS bit?

Those seem dead easy to get hold of, but there is an overwhelming amount of different options, e.g. all these. Ignoring the silly ceramic ones at £60/pair, are there any in particular that would be a decent choice?

    Ta

  • Ah - thanks, I didn't think of that. It was only making the noise for about 10km but I'll check them again to see if they've come loose again.

I usually get SKF, since the price premium for a trusted brand is so trivial when you're only buying a few.

  • Much appreciated, thanks.

  • Will swapping from a 12-25 cassette to a 12-28 require extension of my chain?

  • Maybe, depends how long the chain is at the moment. You certainly need to re-check that it's possible to engage the big:big combination.

How much further forward in the dropout will 48:18 be compared to 48:15? At the moment the axle is pretty much slammed forward so I need a longer chain too - possible to extend the one I have or not worth bothering?

  • What kind of tree is this?

  • There is a tool - search fix me up bike on google.

⅜" or about 10mm. If you have some offcuts from the original chain and you can get the appropriate master link, you can just add a spare inner link and a second master link, that's what I do on my race bike to allow a wider range of gearing. Obviously if the chain is old and cheap, you might as well just throw a new one on there.

  • Nah, brand new bike/chain so by the time I've done all that I think I may as well just get another chain and keep this one as a nice clean spare. The movement is a lot less than I imagined, which is good!

    Thanks for that @Thuekr

  • yew (taxus) and box standards with ivy?

  • 48:18 be compared to 48:15?

    Y u no 48:19?

  • I haven't got a 19t cog (yet)!
