BB30 bearings- just bang them out and press some new ones in.

Sorry, bit of a poor way to word the question.
To re-phrase: is there a thread/ discussion on the forum regarding techniques for removal/ replacement of BB30 bearings, and maybe discussion of the relative merits of B30 vs GXP?

Have you done this? I guess I'm just a bit nervous about mangling the frame. Was wondering if I could adapt a headset press to work. The alternative is a hammer and plank of wood.

I have the tools should you wish to use them?
Park tools drift smacks them out nice and straight, and (AndyP's) headset press with the Park tools BB30 fittings presses them in nice and straight.
Inbetween the out and in phase get everything very clean, grease the inside of the shell and away you go.

Thanks - doesn't sound too different to fitting a traditional headset (and why would it be).
I'll order some new bearings, and probably give you a shout when they arrive.

Knocking them out is easy enough with whatever you have to hand. I managed to press them in again with a small press and sockets and washers to improvise a BB30 kit, not difficult but take extra care to keep everything straight.

After being told it was 'easy to drift bearings into a hub using a hammer' I managed to crack the bearing casing doing just that. So I will be taking much care.

I used a length of wood for ages, however the correct drift makes life easier- and also helps to prevent you destroying the new parts you just bought.
-
• #56660
That (destroying new parts) is basically what I'm trying to avoid.
I was giving serious consideration to switching to using a GXP-type bottom bracket, but was struggling to find the reducer cups I knew existed (a google-fail on my part). But I've found them now. On balance I think I'll try another set of BB30 bearings for the moment.

BBB do a bunch of them for various different cranksets or you can get a converter to turn it into a regular BSA BB.

The old bearings make decent drifts for the new ones too.

Can anyone tell me which hub is relatively cheap but not made of cheese like my old Halo hub?
I should clarify, needs to be fixed 32/36h
-
• #56664
Any decent hubs, like those ambrosio/system ex/etc.
-
• #56665
On one / planet x? Not used them personally but they are cheap.
-
• #56666
They're great, I've been running one with no maintenance and plenty of abuse for 3 squeek-free years.
-
• #56667
So have I, toured, commuted, etc. once the bearing wear out, replaced it with the Phil Wood one instead.
Phil Wood hubs for Novatec money.
-
• #56668
Or SKF for half the price of Phil's bearings
-
• #56669
Good shout, especially if their bottom bracket is anything to go by.

Why is Keith Peat such a nasty little bigot?
-
• #56671
There is no why. He just is. Cunts will be cunts. Chill, accept, and move on.

Anyone got the Park Tools PSC-9 work stand?
Just bought one off chain reaction cycles and am surprised how wobbly it is - the diameter of the base where the vertical tube slots in is simply too wide, it's not sturdy at all, but all reviews I've read I can't see anyone else has the same issue. Will prob send it back for a replacement, just a bit of hassle as I'm based in NL so am wondering if they're all like this?

He spends more time trolling cyclists that he does advocating his supposed cause

I let him annoy me, then I get annoyed at my weakness.
I must kill him and wear his skin as a raincoat.

Let Rapha cut the garment.
Change them?
