  • Anyone know a UK based site where I can get a replacement battery for a late 2011 13" MacBook Pro?

  • Trouble is, the Hope one I have my eyes on that can run 6 cog on it have a disc mount, am I out of luck looking for a trail hubs without a disc mount?

Chris King does a 130mm singlespeed cassette hub with no disc mount, not sure whether the cassette rotor is as wide as the Hope one though. The disc mount on the Hope isn't really a problem if you're after a 135mm hub, there's no point moving the NDS flange any further to the left as that just makes the wheel dished.

  • Great shout on the Chris King, haven't thought about that, will investigate further, thank.

130mm is my limiting factor, it's for the NAHBS wankery bike.

  • 5 speed on CK hubs.

Will do the calculation tomorrow on the spacing, hopefully can run a 8 speed chain on it (given that Jeff Jone manufactured a 6 speed cassette body to use with 9/10 speed chain on the CK).

  • All three of my 'proper' bikes (the ones I actually ride properly/have ridden properly) have 54/55cm frames, and all three have 54 or 54.5cm top tubes. I know this size works for me as I've had a bike fit with Scheritt on my fixed bike and my proper road bike is set up based on this fitting, and also fits me like a glove.

I'm contemplating buying a 56cm frame to use for riding fixed though as 54cm versions of this particular frame seem to be rare for some reason.

Is this madness? I've ridden a 56cm in the past and it was fine, and I'm thinking that basically a slightly shorter stem and 2cm less seatpost showing should sort it, but is this a bad idea?

I don't want to end up buying a frame which doesn't really fit me, should I just keep on waiting for a 54cm to show up?

  • Probably a very bad idea. Don't ask me to explain.

  • Bad idea; wait, or go custom...

  • Is this madness?

As long as your three contact points are in the same relative position, it will be OK. You might notice a slight difference in the way it handles because of the different tiller length and weight distribution, but so many other factor affect feel that those could easily swamp the slight difference caused by effectively shifting the front wheel and steerer axis 2cm forwards.

  • Yeah thanks, that's what I thought really, just wanted to hear someone else say it.

As cupcakes knows I'm looking for a 54cm Pearson Touche secondhand, I want to pick one up cheap then try it for a bit to see if I can live with aluminium. A test ride is all very well but I want a long term one. I've found them in every single size except 54, so will keep looking.

A custom Talbot would be ideal but because I'm saving up for a custom rear end of our flat probably not an option for the moment...

Edit: tester, hmm, that's what I thought, but maybe I should just be more patient.

  • Why not buy a 54cm frame that have a longer headtube?

  • Because I'm looking at a particular frame (Touche/Once more into the whatever...) that is 54cm square and I can't find any. And I don't want to pay £500 for a new one, especially as they depreciate by at least £250 when they leave the shop.

I do also think I prefer a frame that's slightly on the small side for fixed riding if anything, which is another reason to hold out.

  • Ah gotcha, IMHO, custom are awesome, especially with a fixed wheel bicycle being cheaper to build up.

  • But still a lot more expensive than a frame which costs £150! Plus if I went down that route I'd need to build it up with nicer parts. And reconfiguring the back of your flat is very expensive, who knew.

  • I have another question actually, would I be able to fit mudguards under these?
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/trp-r950-sl-carbon-brake-calipers/

Don't worry, I'm not thinking about buying them new. I'm not mad. I currently have these:

Which you can't fit proper guards under. I think given the shape of the R950 SL's the answer should be yes, but not sure?

  • If it helps with the cost I can smash your back doors in.

  • We don't have any at the moment, but we plan to. The smashy bit is the cheap bit unfortunately. It's the bit after the smashy bit that is expensive.

    Anyway, DIY thread >>>>>

    My brakes, thoughts?

  • My brakes, thoughts?

Getting mudguards under any short-reach brake is always tight, it will depend on the frame and fork. If the frame builder gave it some thought and your brakes are running at the full 49mm drop, you have a chance. If it's a close clearance frame and the brakes are being used at 39mm, No chance.

Apple or try your luck on eBay - the non-apple ones just aren't worth the hassle (been through 2). You can see the cycle count so second hand can be ok.

Thanks. It is a frame that was designed to take guards, but my silly brake choice prevented it. I'll go away and do some measuring...

  • Paint getting in the way?

    Nude carbon..

  • People riding with gears that replace cogs instead of cassettes when worn? These days it's so natural to just replace the cassette but I think I'm gonna start replacing the cogs.. Not sure where to get them though as my lbs doesnt stock them.

  • Probably SJSC

  • which manufacturer, and number of speeds?

  • Shimano 9sp. As I'm in NL this is probably not the best place to look though..
