  • Ive just overpaid rent for a flat I've moved out of. My standing order has gone although I'm positive I cancelled it. Bank says they can't do anything. Ive asked the landlord to return it (politely) but what happens if he says no or ignores me? Have I any recourse?

If you had a contract, I'm sure you did, with the landlord have a look at the small print they might mention such a scenario and would probably charge you an admin fee for return of the cash. You never know.
There is also the fact that you have paid for something they have not provided so if it gets to it threaten them with legal action regarding unjust enrichment. Two people I know had a very similar thing and it worked then for car insurance and a sofa.

  • How do you think you cancelled it?

Don't you just go into online banking, select and click cancel?

Bingo. I'm sure I did that. It wasn't cancelled through.

  • so ano coloured, no braking surface, archetypes too deep i think, and tb14 is too shallow but might work..

    Ambrosio Excursion?

  • Will check the contract small print then call the landlord if he doesn't reply to my text.

We're due a full deposit return which hasnt yet happened so I'm sure it's no real administrative strain to return the money.

I'm rather gutted the landlord didn't do the honourable thing and mention it to me; after all the payment was sent a week ago.

  • Is it a standing order or direct debit?

If it happens to have been a direct debit (unlikely in the case of private landlords) then you can just get the bank to refund you (as part of the direct debit guarantee makes the bank liable for any mistakes)

  • Bingo. I'm sure I did that. It wasn't cancelled through.

An avenue worth exploring then. See if you can find/obtain any logs of online activity. Might be able to see where the process broke down. If it's a bank error then I can guarantee that payment will be reclaimed in no time. They're just being lazy.

Don't rely on a text - send a letter, recorded delivery. Give him 14 days, then take him to court.

Indeed - Branch and internet banking are often managed quite seperately - so its often worth phoning the internet banking helpdesk for problems like this (as the branch staff most likely won't have access to internet banking logs etc)

If it was only a week ago, what makes you think he even knows about it? Plenty of people don't know what transactions have occurred until they get their statement.

Landlord is obliged to repay overpaid rent but the timescale isn't as short as the return of protected deposits.

  • I'd worry that the new higher current charger would change things from just within spec. to exceeding specifications regarding heat dissipation, but then my background is more engineering than science.

I'd also be more than happy if you post tomorrow to say it works fine!

Laptops are not resistors. They are full of circuitry to manage heat and power, shuffling the incoming power into all the different voltage levels their various circuits require. Relying on the weakness of the power brick to stop the laptop overheating would be absurd.

I think you'd be in more danger if you tried to use a lower rated power brick, as then there'd be more risk of pulling the brick's output voltage down out of specification as it struggles to meet the laptop's demands and the laptop sucks more current to try and get the power.

  • Question for designers out there - which font would most resemble that used in a dictionary definition?

A friend at work has asked me to find out for her, based on this image:

Is the brick effectively a constant current charger? Replaced by one of a higher rating?

I genuinely don't know about laptop circuitry but have seen the result of careless mixing of chargers and LiPo flight packs for model aircraft.
    This has made me cautious.

Husy - update please - I want to be wrong...

Bring me beer and wheel tonight, collect wheel tomorrow.

Times New Roman would do the job (unless you were really trying to reproduce the typography of a specific dictionary), with the added benefit of it being free and already installed on pretty much every computer.

If you want options you could look at other 'old-style' romans like Baskerville, Bell, or Caslon.

Thanks for this. Do you know what the timescale is and what the relevant legislation is ? Or is this fairly common knowledge.

  • As if by magic he has asked for my bank details. Hopefully this will resolve the situation.

  • I think on here, but certainly doing the social media rounds a little while ago was an article about how the younger generation aren't as good with computers as the middle generation, they can use them but not fix them, massive generalisations obvs but it was an interesting article.
    link?

  • Was it tester that linked to it in a moment of "When I were a kid this was nowt but code."?

  • When I were a kid this were nowt but FORTRAN on punched cards.

  • I'm rather gutted the landlord didn't do the honourable thing and mention it to me; after all the payment was sent a week ago.

Why would they even know? I don't get emails or anything when there's a deposit to any of my accounts and I'd barely check it once a month. Don't assume they're trying to fuck you over.

    What he said.
