  • Dynamo hub + heat gun

  • Say I had new electricity meter installed on the 28th of Nov and now it reads 365 (was 0) where can I find out how much that is costing or whatever as I dont have an online account with them and cant be arsed holding for an hour.

An old bill will tell you the price per unit or kWh.

That's a previous bill from the company, not a policeman.

Failing that, just go online and see what sort of tarrif your energy company offers. If you have held your account for more than a year without having it reviewed you are likely to be on a higher tarrif and should consider switching accounts.

365kwh for a couple of weeks seems like high usage though. I would expect in the region of 180-200 for that period of time unless you're on electric heating.

Also, make sure you aren't counting the number after the decimal point. I made that mistake and got a mega bill. Was fairly easy to sort out but I did shit myself for a bit.

  • Any recommendations for a good linux distro? Planning on running it in a VM and familiarising myself with the terminal.

Thinking Linux mint unless there are better suggestions out there?

If you are running a CLI (terminal) version you might as well just use Debian. No reason to jump on the Ubuntu wagon then. Besides that, most of it is interchangable between the distro's since Ubuntu is based on Debian.

    Now that's a plan.

  • And ride at 2.3mph.

Seconded, you won't need all the bloat. If you really want a loonix 'hobby' then compile Gentoo. But maybe don't.

Debian's stable, light, and has a decent package manager that's easy to use.

    Yes, this.

If you intend to use a virtual machine anyway, you might as well give Vagrant a go and have access to dozens of different *nix setups, all easily sandboxed from each other: http://www.vagrantup.com/

  • Dont have an old bill as it was on prepay and cost an arm and a leg.

  • A quick check on moneysupermarket.com puts an upper average tarrif in central London at £0.15p/kwh which would mean that your 365 units will have cost you £51.10. Based on current usage that would put you at £1000pa for electricity.

If you aren't using electricity for heating or water heating then this is pretty high. It could be a faulty meter but the this is a very rare event.

What sort of heating/water heating do you have going on?

  • Interflora are everywhere aren't they?

Interflora seems to be the antithesis of local/organic.
The flower growing industry is one of the worst for hebicide/insecticide/chemical fertilizer use.

Eh? Interflora use local shops, they just arrange the purchase.

You really think the Australian Natives I ordered for my Mum were shipped from a greenhouse in Britain.. ?

And if you're so concerned with flower pesticides and shit, why even send flowers? Hand write a note on paper you've made from reclaimed wood or something.

  • Sorry, this has been my experience out here in Canada - even in summer.
There isn't an Interflora presence here per se, so they may be different. Using local shops does not guarantee local flowers. As to why even send flowers, I've sent Scilly flowers to my sister in UK, for example, which is fairly local.
And I'm asking in this case for someone else.
And sending flowers is still a nice gesture.

  • Where's Schick with a corrected version of "lokal angebauten Blumen"?

  • Ive just overpaid rent for a flat I've moved out of. My standing order has gone although I'm positive I cancelled it. Bank says they can't do anything. Ive asked the landlord to return it (politely) but what happens if he says no or ignores me? Have I any recourse?

  • Also: shiiiiiiiiit. :(

  • How do you think you cancelled it?

  • Don't you just go into online banking, select and click cancel?

  • Okay I need to replace my rear wheel on the bob. atm its a really old mavic track hub on an open 4 cd rim, the cogs stuck on (tried everything, its fucked) and it makes a rubbish clicking noise

im gna get a novatec rear hub, but I want to find a rim thats similar to the open 4 cd,

so ano coloured, no braking surface, archetypes too deep i think, and tb14 is too shallow but might work..

    any recommendations?

  • also, do -10 degree silver stems exist?

    cheaper than thomson. (31.8)

  • Why not just re-use the open pro?!

  • Put it on a vice and use the wheel as leverage, worked extremely well when mine is stuck solid, despite fucking up the cog.

If the hubs is fine, just service it, it will work out much cheaper in the long run apart from the extra cost of a new sprocket.

+1 for flowers from Scilly (disclaimer - I was born there/lived there for 10yrs):
    These guys are great http://www.scillyflowers.co.uk/

  • I don't know how to tell if the rim is still usable

the sounds awful and it definitely needs rebuilding to it might just be worth doing it on a new hub

    hmm

  • Have you run a rear brake on the rims? is it out of true? rims is very likely to be perfectly fine, unless you have a dent, or a crack on it.

The old hubs should be serviceable, you can alway pay a LBS to do it for you, or do it yourself.

A new hubs, with new spokes, labour cost, etc. will cost a lots more despite the advantage of cartridge bearing.
