Stand on normal scales, pick up bike, subtract first number from second?
I always did this, but thought maybe luggage scales could be more reliable as they work with a smaller range. If it's good enough for most people, guess I will stick with it.

Men and women of LFGSS,
I have an old mavic cosmic front wheel that I bought off eBay recently to matchj a rear wheel my girlfriend has on her bike, and have just noticed that one of the spokes has a kink in it.
The wheel currently runs true, here are some picsMy first thoughts are that this spoke has had it's day and needs replacing, and considering it's such a low spoke count wheel, it would probably be unsafe to ride.
Since I've bought it the wheel hasn't been ridden, although I was trying to bungee rope the wheel to my saddlebag when I noticed the bent spoke. This is the only scenario I could think of that the bent spoke would be my fault, and surely a bungee rope can't bend a spoke?
What should I do?
1). Let my girlfriend use the wheel, and if it breaks try and source another spoke.
2). Find another spoke before she uses it. (Thinking a CX ray would make a similar replacement if I couldn't find a cosmic one?)
3). Try and open a case with the eBay seller (despite his ad saying no refunds)

Hunt the seller down with dogs.

Just found a dent in the rim as well! Feck it seller has been contacted

That's fucked, send it back (unless the seller detailed these faults).

Ride it 'til it breaks; Cosmics are as tough as old boots, so one broken spoke won't kill you. It's not like an R-Sys, where every spoke is fitted with a wheel self-destruct button on a hair trigger.
Kill the seller in the face with fire -

:(
He definitely did not, mention any dents/bent spokes, summary of the listing:
"wheels in good condition"
Although I have a problem in that I've already sold the rear, and I bought a wheelset from him...
Hopefully a part refund will be in order -

That was actually a joke but not now I see your pic of the rim.
Could have put some thick gloves on and straightened the spoke and checked for true.
But that ding in the rim is taking the piss.

Thanks for the advice fellas, such a shame I was planning on taking the wheel to hers today as a surprise, she's been looking forward to it as well.

Push for the part refund although if it goes to ebay arbitration they will be confused by you not having all the goods, and then noone knows what they might say.
Otherwise the rim could be bent into shape and the spoke replaced?

Just so we're not wasting time over nickels and dimes, how much has this broken front wheel cost you?

Don't know about DeRosa id marks, but lots of makers have employed a variety of shapes as stoppers on down tubes, including hearts.
-

Highly doubtful, isn't there other signification to tell if it's a De Rosa?

This...?

It's a lugged steel frame that has been hand sprayed. There are no remaining decals so the hearts made me think of De Rosa.

Last couple of days my chain keeps going slack. I tighten it again and after a couple of days it just goes a bit slack again. Anyone ever had this? It's on a fixed.

Are you using track nuts or smooth nuts? Track nuts are a bit grippier. You could also fit a chain tug: http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FSOOCT/on_one_chaintug
