  • Does that work when you are doubtful that you'll be helped?

Yes, it does - this is (one of the reasons) why medical trials are conducted double blind.

The efficacy of Morphine has been shown to have both physiological and placebo components: It outperforms a plain placebo so we know there is an actual effect, but if you go through the ritual of giving the medicine the efficacy is increased. Also, if you give morphine via a drip then quietly switch the drip for saline, the effect of the morphine continues beyond the point at which it has left the body.

tl:dr; Placebo is weird and awesome, even with real drugs.

  • ^ indeed - there are even some studies that show placebo effects in dogs.... it is a very strange phenomena

  • Homepathy? Placebos? Herbal remedies? Witchcraft? Drugs? Surely if it works for you, then use it. I wouldn't want to give up what works for me* just because someone else argues it can't / shouldn't / wouldn't work for them and their hayfever is somehow worse than mine.

    • Benadryl. Works far better than eloquence. Haven't tried morphine.

I prefer their old stuff, with or without real drugs.

None* of the commercially available hayfever drugs worked for me.

*I've tried everything I can find over the counter but of course not everything on earth.

  • If I build up a wheel with a dynohub (looking to be either a schmidt or a supernova infinity S) onto an archetype rim, is there anything that will stop me swapping it between two bikes - one with mechanical disc brakes and one with rim brakes - providing of course that I remove the disc.

I have a Soma Double Cross DC with Avid BB7 road brakes and a more standard road bike. I'm thinking that if I had the wheel built as per above, I should be able to maximise versatility by being able to choose the bike I want it on depending on where I am going / what riding I am doing.

At the moment, I have archetypes on the Soma with Jack Brown tyres, but the rims could just as easily be fitted with a more standard 700x25. So, by removing the disc and swapping the tyre, I should be able to run the wheel on my roadbike. With regards swapping the light, I am aiming for brake bolt mounted, so it is not too complex to swap. Cabling can reasonably be ziptied in place.

Although there is a bit of faff, it isn't too much and certainly cheaper than buying two wheels and two lights.

Edit: I also realise that the supernova is centrelock and the schmidt 6bolt. A problem solver may or may not be required according to the wisdom of the internet.

Have I missed anything glaringly (pun intended) obvious?

    Advice welcome.

  • I used to get really bad hayfever and took loads of shit for it, recently it's been loads better, had a couple of years where I didn't take anything, well, mainly booze and recreational stuff, maybe that's what helps.

  • I'm trying to unlock a Nokia 6610i to take an Orange sim. A couple of questions;

    1) Does anyone know of any reputable online code breaker thingys? (I looked at this one: http://unlock.nokiafree.org/ but it seems to want me to like it on FB to get the codes;

    2) I have my IMEI, but I'm not sure what network the phone was originally on.

    Cheers.

EDIT: ok so I've just liked it on FB and it's given me a list of codes. But they end up being different depending on the original network. Is there a way to find out what it was?

The phone came from a colleague's housemate so I'm not sure if I'll be able to find out today.

  • wow.

Cheers, so that tells me everything about the phone...

...do you know to use that info to find out the original network?

  • Yup.

  • Apparently the first five digits of the IMSI (not IMEI) can help but how you get them on a Nokia I have no idea

Interesting to see where my mobiles have come from.

  • I need a set of low flange track hubs in black for under £100
    What are my options?

  • To be fair I can use a road front so just need a rear costing under £80.

  • I have a huge favour,

does anyone have a laptop hard drive caddy, or the cable necesary to attach a laptop hard drive to a macbook/pc to try recover some data, the big ask is that i need it tonight and in camden.. my friend in need could possibly pay you a tenner or something for your troubles

  • ^^^ Track hubs, are by definition, large flange. This is in order to make the wheel stiffer for track racing. What you really want, I assume, are bolt on single speed road hubs.

No they are not - plenty of low flange track hubs:

currrent Dura Ace and Campag record are both low flange for example

Buy a goldtec, or do what I did and buy a novatec and then wish you'd bought a goldtec

edit, whoops, didn't realise you were after low flange

  • Really?
I can list a ton of low flange track hubs.
    DA 7600 low flange
    Phil wood low flange
    Mack low flange
    Novatec low flange
    DA 7710
    Campag record
And many many more, just none that I can find are cheap and black.

Thanks, got a pic of the goldtecs from the side?

  • I never said low flange hubs for fixed wheel weren't made, only that they're not suitable for the track. Well, you could use them but not ideal.

  • That's the site I've been on, looking for a view of the flange though.

I doubt it'd make much of a difference to me or many other people but there are many track wheelsets sold with low flange hubs.
