My surly front wheel wobbles significantly riding no hands
In the early 80's Honda brought out a motorcycle, can't remember which one, that riders complained about because it 'wobbled', or 'tank-slapped', when you took your hands off the bars. Their response was "why are you taking your hands off the bars". The idea is that 'quick' steering trades off with some degree of instability.
Mdcct clearly knows more about the physics, but my 2p would be to see if the motortrade rule of thumb works. "Too loose, wobble. Too tight, weave". Tweak the headset a little tighter, and if no different, then looser, to see if it has an effect. In my limited experience you either can or you can't ride a bicycle with no hands, but I've never got to the bottom of it. Always assumed it was a trail/weight distribution issue, but tyre type, pressure and condition play a part on a motorbike, and may have some bearing here.

cheers some great advice 36x18
I'll play with the headset this week.
I have ridden many tyres at pressure between 100-130 over the years. The bar has always wobbled.
I like MDcct's resonance theory though not sure how to test that ( go on i diet perhaps?). -

Possibly CBX750F? IIRC, the combination of a 16" front wheel and none too stiff frame (thin steel tubes, didn't use the engine as a stressed member) would lead to a wobble which didn't actually develop into a tankslapper if you sat up and took your hands off at low speed, i.e. <30mph. There was a resistance by manufacturers in those days to fitting steering dampers on stock bikes, as it looked like an admission that they had got the handling wrong. Suzuki stopped the pretence with the GSXR-11, and now steering dampers are pretty much standard issue on sports bikes.
On the OP's problem, does it wobble when you freewheel or only when pedalling? (Obviously, if it's fixed at the moment you'd need to fit a freewheel to test this)

Is there a Millets in Covent Garden?
Their website says no, I thought I'd seen one around the area with all the camping shops, Google yields results with a few references to there being one.
