  • all mechanically sound and a great ride and the headtube isn't steep.
Been riding it for 5 years and never been able to ride without hands. I can ride no hands on all my other bikes

  • I find it harder to ride no handed on my track bike than road bike, so going to agree with max.

  • Technically it makes sense, although it looks like your road bike fits you better than your track bike, Hen.

  • it is less small for me that's true.

  • wait...when have you even seen me ride it?

  • I've seen a photo of it.

  • What aspect of a bike's geometry makes some bikes harder to ride with no hands?

The geometric factors are weight distribution and trail, but since these are unlikely to be out of whack on a Surly, unless you've put a very wrong fork in it, it's actually more likely that mechanical factors which are not strictly geometric are the problem. Torsional stiffness of the frame, inertia of the steering system about the steering axis, wheel axial stiffness, tyre compliance, etc. etc. Basically, you have a whole bunch of inertia-compliance systems coupled together, and they will have a set of resonant frequencies. The high frequency ones are what causes "shimmy", but there are low frequency ones which, if excited by pedalling frequency, can cause a weave which is usually damped by your holding the bars, and only manifests as a problem when you let go.

  • Thanks for that:-)

So nothing to worry about as those factors don't affect the ride unless i take my hands of the bars?

Well, it's always nice to get things sorted so that you have the option of riding no-handed, but if the core of the issue turns out to be body mass + frame compliance you either have to change the frame or change your weight by a lot.

  • Shite tyres can cause it too.

  • First coat of yacht varnish on ply should be diluted 50/50 with turps.

You're going to run out 90% of the way through the job if it's the first coat on virgin wood.

  • Still on the trail of the tune used on the bbc f1 coverage this morning, and no it's not The Chain,I know what the Chain is !! I'm 39 !!! It's the mild techno bed they use wandering around the markets from 1 minute in. It's the most curious of experiences as I can see myself spliffed out somewhere immersed in this song but up until this morning It had totally fallen out of my brain. Hey, maybe I just had my first flashback ?
Anyway, 1 minute to about 2.30. Waa be da choon ?? (For the youngingtons out there)

cheers mdcc_tester. Wouldn't hurt to change my weight.

  • One min in for me is a whole load of cockpit cam.

Thank God we got that sorted then.

  • Amen, I now recall they did it on TOTP playing chess on a revolving floor with videos of dolphins or summat. Mmmmm, the Nineties.

  • edit: nothing to see here

  • What are they on about in this thread? http://www.lfgss.com/thread53703.html

  • It's a bit too complex to explain here.

Although it's only fair to point out that Wikipedia's reputation for error is more than upheld by the article, which is wrong in almost every particular, notably in calling Mornington Crescent a "game"

  • What are they on about in this thread? http://www.lfgss.com/thread53703.html

Mornington Cresent is a 'game' played on BBC radio 4's I'm sorry I haven't a clue. The aim of the game is to elicit a response from the uninitiated such as ...

What are they on about in that programme?* *

    works every time;-)

  • It's on Radio 4?

  • Man, I was looking at the thread and just couldn't dig it. I liked the look of it though, but was fully baffled.
