Anyone got a free app that downloads maps so you can look at them off line? going to italy and i want google maps on my phone, but offline cos i don't have roaming data. Any thoughts?
Are you on iPhone or Android?
On Android, you can just press the menu button and then select "make available offline". (From memory, if you're on an older version, you can long press on a location, go into details and select "pre-cache area").
If you're on iPhone, you're out of luck. It's probably advisable to just pick up a pre-pay SIM.

Modern compact bars, good and cheap. Which one should I buy?

On iPhone, have a look at the "Offmaps" app and various apps that allow to download Open Street Maps (These are not Google Maps but often as good).

My road bike has Hope Pro 2 hubs on Mavic CXP33 rims with plain gauge spokes. Would I notice much difference with a reasonably priced upgrade around £300? And is there anything in that range that looks traditional? It's for a bike that has slightly old-school looks and an unusual spoke pattern wouldn't sit right.

Deda RHM and FSA Vero are both decent.

No
You could upgrade the performance by rebuilding with CX-Rays for about half that.

Would that really make a large difference then? What sort of weight saving would I be looking at, with 2 x 32? Presumably there's an aero advantage too? What would it cost: around £150 just for spokes and build?!

64 CX-Rays is what, about £90-£100? Switch to alu nipples and veloplugs and you'll lose a meaningful amount of weight at the rim too. Definitely worth it.

Is there a better OS bullhorn without a drop than the Deda Crono Nero Tri, for around the same price?
I'm not getting on with the Low Rider bars, the drop and the longish stem combined is slightly too much. £15 including Deda tape and brake cable outer if anyone wants them by the way, though I'm not sure how much postage from Berlin would cost.

you should probably be using the barrel adjusters to do this, not undoing the cable bolt.

Who would you guys recommend for a wheel build like that? Don't CX like to be built quite tense?

With 32 spokes, high tension isn't a priority, 16-spoke wheels hold up with 1250N. Spoke tension requirement doesn't change materially based on spoke choice, it's a function of wheel geometry and load regime.
CX-Rays will drop nearly 150g off the total weight compared with plain guage, but the main benefit is reduced drag and more resilient wheels, both from the better load sharing from butted spokes and the higher quality of CX-Rays.
I'd advise against both alloy nipples and Veloplugs, they are for weight weenies only and if you were putting your bike on the weight loss plan you wouldn't be starting with Pro 2s and CXP33s
All of which is a bit speculative until you tell us what you're doing on your bike - if you're racing, you probably need to ditch the 32-spoke idea completely, as even a low-end wheel like a Mavic Aksium is far ahead in aerodynamics. If your road bike is just for Sunday jaunts, your hubs are perfect but your life would be improved by switching to wider rims, and if you're about to drop £150 on a rebuild you might as well go the extra mile and pick one of the 23mm rims oft discussed in the various wheelbuilding/tyre choice threads.

Profile Airwing OS is similar, but not necessarily better. It has more room for tri bars, but I'm guessing that's not your priority.
If you wan the Deda and you're in Germany, they are cheaper at

They're not so great from a longevity point of view, no, especially the ally nipples, but it would bring the weight down a bit. Although, yeah, ~£300 on RS80s probably gets you both better aero and lighter weight.

Get some of that matte clay stuff. That's the only stuff I use on my hair, I've never had to pay for it because friends and housemates have always left it lying around, but it works for exactly that. It's in a light blue metal tub.

It's for my road bike, which was originally built as my fast bike with solid and dependable bits. But I've been doing longer rides now and then with some club roadies and feel that maybe its time to lighten up a few components. Having said that, it's a pretty traditional steel frame, so maybe not all that conducive to going on a diet. Basically I just thought that if there was a cheap wheel upgrade that would give me a little bit of an edge, I'd look into it... There's a chance I'll be doing Ventoux et al later this summer and will need all the help I can get!
It was a good book to dip in and out of, definitely worth a few quid.
