Planning to do a 1000mi (~1350km) route this summer. It has hills but they're generally not horrendous. People doing it on geared bikes seem to average around 100km per day, sometimes more, sometimes less.
Roughly how much longer do you reckon it's gonna take on a fixed bike (therein lies the challenge for me)?
I'm not going to be in a huge hurry so I can allow for rest days, slower pace, etc. But is there any kind of general rule like 'fixed should take about 30% longer'?

My ride to work is approx 17 miles and takes me almost exactly the same time with gears or fixed.
100km is a pretty light day geared, pretty sure you could manage that fixed.

As long as you don't go too fast to begin with and try and keep your legs fresh for the later days then it shouldn't be much slower. The problem with riding fixed for days on end is muscle fatigue from them never being able to rest.

Brilliant, cheers. I know guys do Tokyo to Osaka (~500km) on fixed in 5 days so I figured it was sustainable over that tone, but over a route that typically takes 2-3 weeks...
The nature of the route is a little stop-start anyway. It's the 88 Temples pilgrimage on Shikoku (one of the major islands of Japan) if anyone is interested. Route takes you right round the island. I'm not Buddhist but it's something I've always wanted to do!

To replave my Sram Rival brake pads, do I just buy Shimano compatible pads?

Yep

Yes!!!!!
I always thought it was only me. Never understood it. Its like an extended pause.... .... before it continues ticking. Or is suddenly realises that youre looking at it so it jumps into action.
This is an optical illusion of some sort, possibly to do with the fact your brain fills in a lot of blanks without you noticing.

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronostasis"]Chronostasis[/ame] apparently, I remember reading about it in [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mind-Hacks-Tricks-Using-Brain/dp/0596007795"]this[/ame] book, which was quite interesting.

Will an aluminium frame with 135mm between the chain stays happily take a 130mm hub or will it need spacers? I know it's ally but wouldn't there be a tinsy bit of flex, like 2.5mm on each side? This is for a conversion, vertical drop-outs, eccentric ENO hub.

Worth buying?

I wouldn't. Spacing isn't exactly difficult now

Nice! I cycled the top part of Shikoku, but didn't do the whole pilgrimage thing. Its a great ride across to Hiroshima as well. How are you getting down there?

Depends how much ground you want to cover, but whatever you look at one Google Maps gets stored and can also be viewed offline. It is possible to 'pre-load' maps just by looking st the area when you have wifi or whatever, then making sure data roaming is turned off and finding the area yourself by zooming. Make sure you play around with it a lot while you're at Europe/wherever level for easy orientation later. I was chuffed when I found out this was possible.

Velo solo do spacers if I recall, quick and easy way of making sure you are not stressing the frame in a way it won't enjoy.
Can anyone identify these forks?
I'm after another pair, want to put carbon forks on my road bike so need threaded 1 inch steerer, and a long steerer at that.
