  • ^^ I see loads of people riding round Regents Park with 50mm and they seem to manage.

That said a few people have said they've suffered terribly from the air pressure riding from Old St down Clarkenwelll Rd.

    LOL thanks

  • sorry another wheel question. any truth in the deep rim crosswind fail opinion? is 50mm too much or just right

constant sidewinds are ok because you just counter steer. Riding around town is harder because the wind comes in gusts down side roads and around buildings so it can take you by surprise. I've had my front wheel lifted up and placed a few inches to the left before.

  • ^ see!

  • even on my 30mm dp18's i've had major trouble crossing bridges over the thames as it tunnels the wind along like a cannon if its bad and it hits you side on. not nice at all.

  • check the pads are lined up properly with the rim, check the pads and rim for grit/embedded things. If they judder or squeak, toe them in a bit. Otherwise just ride it.

    Agree.

    Blooming nice bike Sparky.

  • I'm fond of it. Had it a while now, but not had the dry weather or time to ride it. Just need to iron out a couple of frustrating kinks and then hopefully ride the hell out of it this summer.

  • I hope so Sparky!!!

  • I want to send a rim to France. The post office has just said to send a rim will have to be couriered which will be an obscene amount.

Any suggestion for how to send it?

  • wom is a combination of many factors, including rim depth, profile and construction. Zipps sound like a cruise missile even at low speeds, I think this is because they are nicely hollow but have no idea really. It might even be the dimples #marketingbollocks. At 30mph+ they sound phenomenal.

    Really? Never noticed.

All I notice is the weird hollow carbon sound when clunking up to the 11T...

Discs on the other hand... wom wom wom... as proper timetriallists ride past me while I console myself with not actually being able to push the 11T...

  • I rode my road bike in today and noticed a rhythmic brushing noise from the front brake, only when using it. It makes a tttthhhhhttt noise, not a clunk, exactly once every wheel rotation. I checked the rim and tire and there's no scratch, seam, etc. Doesn't seem to be anything stuck in the pad - and anyway, it occurs on a wheel rotation, so I'd have thought it was rim/tyre. Any ideas?

Rim seam/join slightly raised? Often after rim+pothole meeting.
Worn rims, about to split (my fave).
    Buckle - easy fixed.

Pad could be rubbing on tyre too if they're close and not quite adjusted right. Could also be your ears reaching resonance velocity..

  • Checked those Hippy. Will remove ears and go for a ride tonight, just to rule that out.

  • 808's? blimey they are 1k each.

    Not if you buy used.

  • sorry another wheel question. any truth in the deep rim crosswind fail opinion? is 50mm too much or just right

Yes. But not so much on road bikes.

Trying to unwrap Powerbars whilst riding TT bike in stupid wind with 808 front wheel is not fun...

  • thanks hippy. so what would you recommend then? must make wom noises and be suitable for commuting, laps of le park, and long rides if and when i choose to do them.

  • I don't do wom and commuting sorry. Strictly durability on my commuter. Carbon for racing only.

If I was to pick something for commuting it would be Mavic iO + Disc. Cheap and cheerful ya know?

  • How long has there been a cyclesurgery on waterloo bridge?! Just discovered the thing, massively convenient.

opened last week think, very recent

  • haha recockulous price for that io

Thats why you should open all your bars before you get on the bike ;)

spam alert - but these wom very nicely.

  • Cosmic Carbones make a pretty good fist of that hollow "shooooooooooooo" noise.

IME CXP33s and even the brick-profile RS80 C24s make a little bit of that noise, but you can't really hear it above the wind once you get to 20mph+.

I get more wom from my DA C24s than I do from my American Classic 58 carbons (supposedly undimpled OEM 404 rims?). As much as I love them, I've never quite gotten over the initital disappointment of going for my first ride on the 58s and just getting the seady rumblewhoosh rather than the wom.

From the wheels of the people I ride with, it's the Carbones that make the best noise.

  • I can't believe a wheel purchasing decision is being made based upon sound over any other factor.

if it's genuinely going to be used for commuting, hed3s are super-bombproof, and give good wom. But I wouldn't commute on wom personally*.

  • Hed3's ; the dubstep of wheels.

  • hed3s are super-bombproof, and give good wom.

No, Hed 3s give wokka wokka. For proper wom you need a hollow lenticular disc, e.g. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/pro-carbon-disc-clincher-rear-wheel/

Wom matters! Just gauging opinion really for when my current wheelset dies which looks to be quite soon.

  • A lot of carbon rims have a foam core, I think you get a better quality of Wom from a hollow rim- one formed around an inflated bladder rather than a foam core.
