As the cartridges are going to be thrown away you could try to remove the seals, (tip of a penknife blade) flush all the crap out of the bearing, get everything nice and clean pack with nice fresh grease replace the seals and reinstall.. usually all the grittiness is rust as much from the races as anything else.
If there is a lot of corrosion try soaking overnight in coca cola (the real thing, an the only time I would recommend buying the stuff) which would get rid of all the rust. Then flush it out and grease it. They will certainly work for a while longer, often with a good dose of grease, for ages. And you have nothing to lose.
Try also typing the bearing serial number into google, occasionally that will send you to bearings direct or similar which is often a massive saving. -

^ never works. Once the seal is broken it will never be right again.

Watch out for brinelling though.

^^^^I've done it before with limited success but never lasts long.
I've managed to get a pack of 5 of the identical but non ceramic ones for a tenner.
Cheers all.

^ always works. Once the seal is put back properly it will be right again.
Yeah, it is fiddly, but I have done it and usually do it to new bearings to put a decent amount of grease especially in the lower bearing

Last resort though...not the sort of thing you do to your beloved road bike if you can help it.

So my newish first build is crunching a lot...
By which I mean, when I put anything more than moderate pressure on the pedals there's a loud click from the rear freewheel cog and the pedal cranks jump forward a quarter turn or so. This then happens again anbd again until I'm up to a normal speed.
I think the cheap £7 freewheel off eBay may be at fault, and I'm minded to buy a new better (and more stealthy silent) one but I'm wondering if anyone's got any diagnosis for me?
I've bought a Groupon voucher for a service and I'm taking the machine in for them to have a look at since (as documented elsewhere here) my effortsregarding the wheels have resulted in another deathtrap feature (where the rear wheel tries to jump out of the dropouts at any given point) so I might just say to them, "Do what needs doing..."

Brinell not Brunel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_August_BrinellYeah, but I don't find that as funny as Brunelling*.
*something Uxbridge students get up to on weekends.

Is determining shifter speed simply a matter of n+1 where n = no of clicks?

sjs do recessed ones in various sizes, depending on your seatpost diameter.

how many Co-codamol can I safely take in a day? I've had 2 and its not enough.
-
• #23547
Extremely unprofessional and unqualified advice here so be warned.
The biggest concern about taking co-codamol is the paracetamol in it. The paracetamol will kill you long before the codeine does if you take too many and too many is not actually that much for most people.
You should talk to your doctor and see if they can adjust your pain meds.

The Codeine in co-codamol does very little to kill the pain, it is however enough for you to become addicted to. Stonehedge talks sense. What are you taking pain relief for?

My hip (and also the awful head/eye ache I've got today), pain has started up again since i've started my new job. I'm going to go over to Occ health as ask for a better chair, but in the mean time.
