why not just get a fit for purpose fork...
Oh my, thank you so much.. Hadn't thought of that one yet.

What has brought on this change of mind? I am going to fit my cadence tomorrow to make it all about spinning. I would guess if you have a bit of time you should be able to get a 705 for £150.
What change of mind? Garmin hating? ;)
I still hate them, but I have realised I don't really have the time to do thorough Google streetview reccies and make proper ride notes. Ridewithgps + Garmin I do have time for. 705's go for c. £200 on eBay, second hand. 605's go for at least £100, so it doesn't seem to make sense to buy them second hand.
There's no difference between the 605 and 705 except stuff I don't want, so the 605 seems like the better option. Unless the new features of the 800 win out...

Is a Garmin 800 worth the £107 extra over a 605? Both new. I care not for cadence, heart rate and so on. I just want to upload routes I've plotted in ridewithgps.com and get it to tell me where to go while recording where I go and how fast I go.
I have a Garmin 705, with Open Street Map rather than Garmin maps however- makes no odds if you plot your route before leaving.
You are welcome to borrow it, I have all the relevant sensors (for the bike- you'd have to supply an HRM if you wanted it).

fox, the HRM and cadence are really useful things to have.
-
• #21532
^I agree with James on this.
-
• #21533
Why?
(To qualify, I know I can spin fine, it's not like I need to work on it. And why would I need to worry about my heart rate?)
-
• #21534
Thanks for the offer of the 705 Neil, I might take you up on it. I was trying to rush myself into making a decision tonight as the 605 is £154 at Wiggle until tomorrow, but I'm not sure I'm sure enough yet. Especially with all this pro-800 talk ;)

it is really useful to help improve ones cycling
it means you don't blow out too early on long days, for example by pushing your heart rate up too far on an initial climb in the day
knowing how to spin is useful - i tend to spin around 95rpm on the road bike, but it helps you keep the feet going at a more constant tempo as you change the gears
on my garmin the two most prominent things on the display are the cadence and heart rate, as i consider them to be the most important to me

Fox- just let me know, I was going to chuck it on the CX bike but can use my Forerunner 305 for that whilst you have a play with the 705.
I'm in two minds about keeping it or selling it as I've got the SRM unit on the "proper" bike now.

When is it acceptable for your bars and seatpost to be from a different manufacturer?
Always. Campag seat post, Cinelli stem and bars
-
• #21538
On that subject, I am going to try to find a Ritchey bar that is the functional twin of the 3T Ergonova, and if that fails, buy a pair of Ergonovas and chuck them on, matching the seatpost be-damned.

• #21539
was it campag bars that snapped?

was it campag bars that snapped?
iPad autocorrect decided that the correct spelling of "Cinelli" was ""
The bars that snapped were no name Chinese shit.
Edit: with Nitto stem and Campag seatpost,
Previously it has had Nitto, charge and Cinelli bars.
My vigorelli has Cinelli seatpost, ritchey stem and Nitto bars. Condor bake lever and Campag brake. And Miche cranks. Dammit would shudder at the thought of such mixing and matching. -

Pfft, who cares if things match (apart from ocd) Easton post, Pro stem, ITM bars seem to work perfectly.

I have this frame:
I want to effectively shorten the head tube by fitting a thinner headset piece than standard (between the head tube and stem). Much like has been done in this photo:
I believe the make of the headset in my frame is FSA but which of the headset standards? There seem to be quite a few.
-
• #21543
^^utter lies. If the parts don't match they will fall apart.
-
• #21544
^^
Sumo'd Negative Headset Spacer service can be hired to give you a much shorter head tube for a more comfortable, vertically compliant ride for just £49.99 ph
