nice. yeah, scalpel-wielding is a good way to pass the time.
my question, since people have been posting how long their commute takes them, is how come my 10 mile commute takes 1h20m? I don't feel that slow :/
I know I'm not fast, but not that many people pass me. I (thankfully) don't do a lot of rush hour commuting, so I normally meander and take my time and don't watch the clock, but recently I've had to join the crowds on the main roads a few times, and I'm surprised how long it takes. last night I even had a bit of a tailwind, although I had a little wait for the ferry...

Hard to say really. Firstly, what is your commute? We can take a look at it and make an estimation of what might be normal for your route.

last night, which felt reasonably speedy, post-rush about 8.30pm, on the main roads between beckton and stockwell via the ferry. yesterday morning, proper rush-hour, and into a headwind - took the same time! but I was late, and the ferry was quicker.
beckton -> ferry -> woolwich rd -> trafalgary rd -> greenwich high rd -> new cross rd -> peckham rd -> camberwell new rd -> vasall rd to clapham rd.
it's a bit of a stupid question really, obviously it's just that I'm slower than most people (seemingly, everyone) on the forum. bah.

Do you ride a small gear ratio?
My commute I described earlier in the thread - http://ridewithgps.com/trips/251789
This is the shortest possible route, but I often mix it up and add miles :) I'm riding 49:18.

I find i'm slower in the morning due to woolwich and greenwhich roads being at standstill, although the last few mornings have been quieter.

:( It was all quite fast flowing a roads so it was easy to be swept along with the flow of the traffic, and I used to give things a bit of a push on the way home.

also those of us who ride all year round don't have to regain our form when the weather gets good!!

No.
I also struggle to trust anyone who wears a beanie when its not snowing out.

who was that to?!

I was a bit surprised that morning and evening were the same yesterday, given that in the morning the roads were quite congested (I don't like to go much faster than traffic) and there was the headwind, whereas in the evening the traffic was heavy but moving fine and I was keeping pace with it. maybe the ferry was enough to make the difference.

big, grubby, badly-knitted but no doubt shop-bought woolly hat plus shorts and flip-flops = one of the worst 'looks' of recent years. I take instant hatred to anyone wearing it.

There must be private companies that do it. Like the ones that shipped my bike to Mal's house in Poland from my door for £32.
I sent a bike to Dublin last week for £46 having taken it to my local post office. Originally I had just removed the saddle and the front wheel but 'volumetrically' it would cost close to £200. I scrounged an old box from Halfords recycling skip and dismantled the bike including removing the chainset as it was too tall to fit the box. Once it was all in the box it weighed in at almost 16 kilos. The P.O website said it would be £43 but in the flesh it was a bit more. I don't know if this will help.

It takes a lot of energy to shift this weight, even on a bike. So i need sometime off the bike to recover, That's what winter is for!

No idea about your roads but was chatting about this issue this mornign in the changing room with a colleague. He has the sameish commute as me (16 vs 17km) and he takes an hour whereas I take half that. (I'm not a better/faaster cyclist than he is).
I used to use some of his roads on my old commute and I was much slower (half the lenght in about 25 mins). So what I'm taking a long ime to say is that you can be the fastest in the world but if you have shitty roads (i.e. busy and no space) and a ferry you are always going to be a bit slower than you would be if it was a clear run.
Last few days my average speed has upped by around 3kmphr for the simple reason the schools aren't in. I find the best way to compare the commute or any regular training run is to maje sure your computer stops when you do. If I start to add in the time at lights, stopping for police parked on the cycle superhighway etc I have no real way to compare the journey other than perceived effort (which can be affected by other things like being knackered etc).
Sorry for being no help

Whatever you do, don't compare your time to mine. I'm competitive with myself to the point where I've done 18miles in 55minutes on the polo bike.
Thanks :) finished it late last night and it looks halfway decent for what it is. But I'm certainly going to invest in some proper stuff for next time. This shit's way more fun than watching iPlayer.
