got a problem with mrs.murtles ibook g4 the one white before the macbook
it won't charge properly and the clock always resets.
is it just the battery? -
• #780
what does the info on the battery say? menu>about this mac>more info>power.
maybe reset the PMU SMC/PRAM -
• #781
not sure will have to have a looksee later.
it only stays on for a few minutes, then turns off. -

it only stays on for a few minutes, then turns off.Sounds like a battery issue. They only last about 400 charge/discharge cycles I think (i.e. not that long!)
-
• #783
that is what i am thinking/hopeing, would be a lot easier just to buy a battery
-
• #784
Strange that the clock re-sets though. You'd think it'd have some kind of battery on the mainboard (they're normally watch batteries or the like)
-
• #785
Yeah but if it's a g4 it probably gone as well. Happened to my old powerbook after about 4 years i think
-
• #786
The iBook uses a small capacitor rather than a small battery to hold a charge for the PRAM, does the iBook work from the mains? The Power info mentioned above would be useful to know too.
I recently service my brother's TiBook (G4), that machine has been running non stop for years and still trundles along quite happily... there's life in G4s yet.

400 charge/ discharges crap, I must be near that already.
Oh just wondering do you guys leave your macbooks charging the whole time you are using them? I have mine plugged in most of the time I'm using it and don't really have it unplugged all that often. Would this affect the battery life/use all that much?

Nah, my emac is based around the same motherboard and everytime you disconnect it from the mains the clock resets, so that would make sense.

I think you should unplug it as soon as the battery is fully loaded, then run it down and then re-charge again. apparently keeping the lead in at all times wears the battery down.
This is just things i've heard though, not read up properly on it

Batteries last longer by running down to ~5% then a full re-charge to 100%, then disconnect from charge and run down again, yep.
Think of it as a battery that's healthy and exercised often vs a lazy one on the mains. You can usually check the "current" battery capacity vs "original" on a machine (if inclined).

The eMac and iBook are not based on the same board whatsoever and have completely different PM.

• #791
Right I think I'll run it off the battery more often now then.
Should you let the battery die or just run it down to red then recharge?
-
• #792
You're looking to run it down as much as possible but not deplete it, depletion can mess up the PMU's understanding of the battery which can lead to other problems (unlikely).
Just plug it in when it states you're on emergency power?
Note: Some batteries will last longer (or be more healthy over time) than others, it's a bit of a lucky dip.

sorry should be apple symbol (top left corner) > about this mac > more info > hardware > power > battery info.
should tell you how many cycles and it's output plus condition.google resetting p-ram
it's a startup holding down keys combo -
• #795
i know where it is, but was asking what info to look for :)
cycles = 398.....so probably the end of it's life then
edit, just looked at mine (a newer macbook) cycles =718
and her amperage = 0
and charging says "no"
.....so probably the end of it's life then
-
• #796
amperage 0.
it's dead.
-
• #797
cheers buddy.
off to ebay for a replacement then -

My mistake. I'd best check my information first, although I can't remember where I got that idea from...

More font sniz.
Still haven't fully rectified the snow leopard font issue as am having problems crossing OS's. i.e we're unable to share fonts between SL and Leopard.
So, you know when you send font files and they loose they extension and come up as exec files? Presumably you over-come this by adding the extn, but how do you know which one to add?I'm pleased not to have to go to a mac forum, they're not half as interesting.

Do you need to add an extension?
Couldn't you right click and "Open with..." Font Book?
great!!
what next?
