Delete iPhoto from your mac. It is the only way to happiness.
Rumours are that as Aperture is being stopped, and they are messing around with Pictures on the iCloud, that iPhoto will be binned soon to and a whole new product will come out.

Is anyone using Hola / US Netflix with a Chromecast? I’ve been using an HDMI cable from Macbook to TV but the quality isn’t great with Hola, just wondering whether casting would improve it or if the problem is more with the proxy server gubbins.

I'm not sure about with Apple (although I suspect it will be the same as it's chrome driving it) but I found that I couldn't watch US netflix easily with chromecast. It doesn't use the proxy settings from your laptop but rather direct to your router so you need to either set up a proxy/vpn on your router or create a hotspot on a device with a proxy/vpn and connect the chromecast to that.

Anyone work with a Mac network?
I can't find out how well running OS X server and clients with different versions works. It would probably be that the clients would be 10.10 and the server 10.6.8, but there's a scenario where the clients would be 10.6.8 and the server 10.10.
Any insight appreciated.

Can anyone suggest a good online store for getting replacement mac parts? Need to upgrade RAM and replace battery on my mid-2009 Pro.
-
• #7133
I'm in the process of upgrading, my old computer runs 10.6.8 (snow leopard) to hopefully 10.8 (mavericks) and wondering if anyone has done this before, and what I'd need to complete the leap.

ram - Crucial
No idea about battery, but I'd be keen to find out -

Can't you just upgrade your OS from the App Store?
-
• #7136
^^^ this. 10.5.8 was the problem child as you need a disc to get it up to app store level. you shouldn't have any problems from where you are just going through the store.
-
• #7138
ah, good point. have you previously 'purchased' (downloaded, assigned to your apple id) mavericks on a different machine? if so, OSX mavericks will be in your 'purchases' list when you use the app store.

if you don't have it in your history and you're around during the week you could pop over and I'll sign in for you and you can grab it using my account? not really happy giving out login details so doing it without the legwork will involve finding another generous soul a little more local to you (like monsieur chevrons).

What's in it for me tho'?

Gah Apple you suck! I have a 2007 MacMini2,1 that I want to put linux on. It's no longer able to run newer OSX and chrome etc... won't upgrade. What on earth possessed Apple to make EFI expect a 32bit boot loader for a 64bit OS ? Even worse, it point blank refuses to boot from any USB device. Tried reFINd as well, same thing.
Had to order blank DVD's in the end... hopefully it will boot of those to install Linux.

Hai @Kirth hope you're enjoying those sunny 17 degree days in San Fran, I'm not jealous, obviously.
Would you actually want newer OSX? Because I think SFOTT might help?
http://oemden.com/sixty-four-on-thirty-two-sfott/You could also use Chameleon bootloader or similar to boot straight into 64 bit but then you'd basically be turning your mac into a hackintosh. Weird.
MacPostFactor does this too but they've temporarily pulled Yosemite support. Would do Mavericks now though.
If you do any of these things and break your mac don't blame me :)
It's more work than you should have to put in just because Apple decided to
make you upgrade to a new one for no real reasonswitch to 64 bit EFI. -

Weather is awesome as ever. Shame though, as I want more snow!
I actually do want just a headless linux server. I've no need for it to run OSX as I use my MBP for that.
Chameleon will brick Apple hardware so that's a no go.
Tomorrow my DVD's should turn up, and then I guess I'll just stick with a 32bit OS due to the cluster-fuck that is Apple.

Shit that's tempting, perfect media server. All I need is a telly...

Man, that IS tempting...

I will resonate the above. Temptation is great.
iPhoto just garbled all my photos for the second time. Didn't have anything of value there, just mobile phone backups that lives elsewhere as well, but still. Is it really that hard to just make it work?
