Normal downloaded stuff via VLC fullscreen is fine on MPB... weird sound thing only happens with iTunes rentals being played via quicktime.
So yeah, ATV it is, I guess!

get a mac mini as dedicated tv/media box.
from the 'throwing money at a problem' school of things. -

Is your TV 720p or 1080p?
I can't play proper HD content through itunes via HDMI because my telly isn't proper 1080p HD or something - always comes up with a warning and then plays it full screen without sound. Works fine on the laptop screen with sound, the minute you unplug the HDMI cable.
Try going full screen on some SD content through iTunes...

Dunno. I'm confused. It's a full on Sony 4K ultra HD 3D jobbie.... so can deffo handle 1080p.
I'll just get ATV... and if it still doesn't work, I'll just throw my fucking iPad at the tv and take a shit in a bag and send it to apple.

I don't think Chromecast really works with Mac stuff
The Videostream app for Chrome is good for streaming files off a MBP to a Chromecast, don't think it works for ipad tho, so no use in relation to the orginal question!

I'm thinking of getting Chromecast. My house is full of Apple devices, but I tried my friends Apple TV and thought it was a bit lame for £80. I don't use iTunes that much at the moment and it would be mainly for watching some borrowed box sets, streaming totally official live sport streams and something that allows mrs roboto to watch her Japanese tv shows on a big screen.

is it trying to output the audio over hdmi when you're using it as a video only or something? (hold alt and click the sound icon on the finder bar thing to change outputs)

Seems reasonable

ooh.

my vlc used to have a bit of a fit over that too, but everything seems quite happy now (hdmi from mac mini to tv, with 3.5mm out to amp instead of sending the audio to the tv)

PS I haven't installed Trim Enabler and everything seems absolutely fine, will my MBP now blow up?
If you had a problem with Trim Enabler it wouldn't boot, once it's booted and working you're fine.
You'll know this now of course.
I did the moving home folder to a new location thing @mattioats recommended and it works well, OSX on SSD, home folder on HDD.

Odd, the 2009 imac I use in the office is much happier on yosemite than it ever was on 10.5.8, and that's about as far down the spec tree you can get.
My hackintosh is pretending to be a Mac Pro 3.1 (2008) and has never been happier either.
Have they fixed sleep yet? Anyone know?

Any ideas why I get black stripes on photos taken with an iPad in a studio lighting environment?
Is there a remedy for this?
-
• #7117
What kind of lighting? The frequency is likely the issue. Since you have no control over the ipads shutter speed (I dont know if you can remedy this by shooting with an app), you're going to have to change the lighting.

how?

It's working well post-wipe. Hardly anything on it now, zipping along.

You could also use Plex, I'm watching a movie on it right now wirelessly... For once, it's fucking working properly...

videostream for chrome, chrome plugin to stream other stuff, inbuilt chromecast option in iplayer, netflix and google play / google music browser apps
as well as chromecast option in the ios apps for iplayer, netflix and google apps
the only things I'd like is native apps for itv player, 4od and eurosport player, but the browser plugin works for now

Has anyone got Yosemite Mail Drop to actually work?
There seem to be loads of posts online about people trying to use it, and various instructions about which boxes to tick in the preferences menu. I'm following everything to the letter, but I'm still getting "unable to send message, try again later" type message boxes. -

Updated to Yosemite before I left, and uninstalled my legit cc for a possibly dubious version. All worked swimmingly, not even any bootcamp probs. hurrah. Now back to the swimming pool...

Its not worth it anyway. There are loads of issues with it. Mainly that if you send a large file and it gums up your outbox, you have no way of cancelling it or even seeing how much progress has been made. You can't pause it either. You have to go poking around in hidden files to delete it and start again.
I tried very hard to like it, but right now its useless.

Can anyone suggest a good ipad mini case that will protect and act as a stand for movie watching? Something stylish and not from apple themselves ideal.
Oh tits - sorry I mis-read your post, didn't realise you were using an iPad.
Yep - you're probably going to need Apple TV, I did a bit of research into it a few months back and I don't think Chromecast really works with Mac stuff (pretty much because Apple aren't interested in supporting a competitor). I've been meaning to buy Apple TV for a while, but can't quite bring myself to throw any more money at that company right now.
I've never had a problem going fullscreen via an HDMI cable.. but that's using my old MBP which now lives under the TV as a sort of stuff-watching bitch unit - not tried it with my Air.
