you suggested they make their main system drive into a Raid 0 array.

OK, all eyes back to me!!! These guys have a few going, downsizing the company, total legit. They have the 250 HDD I could possibly haggle on the price point or I could got for 60GB SDD for also £299, same as the 500GB. Opinions?
299 for 60 Gb wtf ?! You could get a 512Gb Samsung for that price

oh wait... hahaha you mean the whole mac mini doh

a SSD will make a massive difference but 60GB is pretty small... maybe get the cheapest HDD you can and get a cheap 120GB SSD and get someone to put it in...
Sohi, this isn't "the angry" internet, people tend to be more civil here... I never use a machine without at least one back up (as well as off site for projects) so have no fear of Raid 0 and have seen impressive results with it (videos).

• #5731
hahaha... yes, that does include the mac mini itself... lol so thoughts? 60gb seems a little low considering after all thigns installed, I would have about 20Gb left?

Lacie do rugged drives with thunderbolts for about 140 now... if you are not using the Display port for the monitor.
-
• #5733
I would be tempted to get the 500gb disk version, buy a 120Gb and move the 500gb to an external drive for something else

• #5734
I am not sure if these guys will wanna haggle, just had a look on ebay, £300 seems about right for even lower specs mac mini... if we are talking about £20 off or so, I might as well go for the 500GB. Would I be taking a piss if I offered £250 for one of their 250GB HDD mac mini?
By the way, if anyone wants the contact, shoot me a PM. I don't want to post it here purley because a few of my peers from my course have expressed interest in getting one...

I think knowing more about computers than others def gives you a green card to be a bit of a dick. Nothing beats an IT-lecturing, especially when it comes to macs where we're used to things working, rather than needing work.

Not really, especially if he isn't actually right.

Sorry, that was meant to be ironic. Internet fail.

• #5738
Ha, I'm obv a bozo or missing it... sorry.

• #5739
I am sorry, get a second SSD and run your system from a Raid 0. Money well spent..

iPad air and chrome cast on their way.
Why did you choose chrome cast over Apple TV? Are you planning to use it with the iPad and cast to a tv? Interested to hear how you get on

I'm not that impressed with my Apple TV, I figured I'd be able to stream movies directly from my MBP but I can't... Which is a bit shit...
I only really use it to stream footie matches to my Smart TV...

Small SSD running OS and apps only (all files on the old drive)
Will this give worthwhile speed gains ? I mainly use Indesign, so loads of linked image files etc. which will still be sat on the normal drive.

I've got a mac mini with a home-made fusion drive and the SSD is only 64GB. Works like a charm, boots in around 15 seconds.

I've got a late 2009 iMac. Can't mount an SSD inside without losing the optical drive. Would it be possible to use an external SSD for the OS and apps, and use the internal HDD for storage?
-
• #5745
Unless your iMac has an eSATA connection, any speed gain from SSD would likely be choked by USB/FW.
I'd gladly cast out an internal optical drive to get an SSD directly connected via SATA. This replaces your internal SuperDrive. -

Would like to hear more about a home made fusion... tempted to try it myself...

I am having 2nd thoughts about the Mac mini with regards to the storage space, I am now thinking maybe I should go for one of their 60 SSD... hummm...

Hadn't considered an external optical drive though. Duh! That external superdrive you linked to is apparently not compatible with my iMac, not sure why that'd be though. I wonder if there's an external case I could mount the iMac's optical drive in and connect via usb?

Just fired up my 2005 PowerBook G4 to lend to that friend of mine whose mac is broken and couldn't make an appt with Apple within the next week... OMG... it's amazingly fast... considering... I am impressed... start up time is about 20 seconds... and I much prefer this silver keyboard... much better feel...

So I picked up the Mac mini today, anyone have any 4GB you wanna part with cheap? All I want Is to do it up to 8GB, so before I go for some new ones, if anyone has some they no longer need the it might work out nicely for both parties.
