  • In all honestly will welcome something new, just waiting for a big update a Air/Pro as the current line is looking a little 2011 still...

My current laptop is clocking on for 6 1/2 years and it's still pretty quick. Battery is terrible only last 30 mins at best but I use it at my desk pretty much all the time so it's no problem

  • Suspect something new coming this year laptop wise... 12inch something... Retinas are pretty nice too.

  • There is always something new coming out from apple every year. A colleague has been wanting to buy a mac for about 3 years now, she is still wanting for the newest and latest. I said to her just buy it coz 6 months down the line, whatever she would have would become old model. Apple can be slightly annoying on this front.

  • Same for any company, it's just more noticeable as they have a small number of products and proper updates rather than fucking mess. Trying to buy a non apple monitor has proven to me how fucking shit pc manufacturers are

  • ^ very true. Apple also always make bigger noise when he products are round the corner, which isn't a bad thing...

  • What monitor are you looking at? I have an older model of the dell one mentioned up thread, it's alright...

  • I'd like something decent 27-30". If I can get away cheaper than an Apple Cinema for £800 I'd be a happy man, but it has to be good. Spending £450 on a Dell with ghosting is a waste of money, rather spend 800 and get something actually good.

  • Go Apple, the extra features make it well worth the extra cash imho...

Mine's paid for itself many times over...

  • Saving time plugging in just the one cable instead of two?

I'm keen on the apple for all obvious reasons, but bosswoman wants to keep it sensible

  • iPad air and chrome cast on their way.

  • What apps are people using for virus / mac tidying?

  • None.

Do we need to worry about viruses yet? Has the time come?

For tidying up I just re-install from fresh every two years or so

  • Viruses? Nah.
Cleaning- Onyx... fixes permissions etc. DO NOT use Clean My Mac (on Mavericks) as it has a really nasty bug in which breaks Apple software (mail. ical etc).

  • Wish they'd hurry up and release the new Mac mini.

  • ahah you sound like me Ben... i've given up...

Yeah no way I would use that or Norton etc etc.

Will have a look at Onyx

  • Just comitted myself to a 2nd hand 2012 mac mini, just the box standard configurarion, good condition and all. £299 including the HDMI cable. Have I got a good enough deal?

Got my degree show coming up and leaving a cheap mac out there is better than leaving either of my laptops... Yap, we are based in New Cross and yap things go walkie all the time!

  • Yeah damn good.
I recommend getting an additional SSD drive fitted... should cost less than £150 and make the world of difference...
If you can afford it get 2 equal SSD's and set them up RAID 0... dead fast.

  • Yeah damn good.

    sounds like complete bullshit

I've got my external drive and keyboard permanently plugged into it so I chuck my laptop on the stand, plug the Thunderbolt and power cables in and I'm ready to go... Call me lazy... :)

  • lazy..

Nah, just needed a cheap computer to play stuff etc, not gonna bother upgrading it.

    Really? Please explain...

  • Really? Please explain...

a single drive nearly saturates sata III. You don't gain anything in the real world
except loss of data becomes more likely.

    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/ssd-raid-benchmark,review-32689-10.html

  • Yeah, but you are splitting data over 2 drives hence doubling speed... startup/shutdown is not where the gains are felt (or needed)... I believe.

I was offering advice, to someone asked... no need to be rude.
