^^ I've got a 2013 Retina Macbook Pro with an SSD in it and Photoshop loads up in the blink of an eye. I'd do it.
Does anyone here have experience with Codekit?

I need some kind of network storage/backup solution for home, I don't think using one hard drive as my sole backup is really that safe...
Is it as simple as getting a NAS box then filling it with cheap drives?
Any suggestions? I'm useless at this kind of thing...
Running Mavericks on a 2.5GHz i7 MBP...
I use a service based in the US called Backblaze. A time machine-style auto backup over the net. Initial upload takes an age, but after that it's pretty good. Then you can log in and access your files from anywhere, like a whole computer dropbox.
$50 per year, so cheaper than buying a NAS and drives, but slower. There are probably services in the UK, but these guys were cheap.

Ever since I got a Macbook Pro my home wifi has been dropping off regularly, sometimes several times a day. I've used PC laptops with Virgin Media for about 6 years with no problems, then I got the MBP and boom. Shit internet. (When it happens I check my phone and it's also lost wifi so it's not just the MBP losing connection).
Is this really a thing that might happen or is it just coincidence? Anything I might try next time it happens?

what is the best way of adding avi movies to itunes?
I prefer playing via apple TV direct than using VLC and mirroring the desktop...current process is shite:
download film
add to Handbrake
wait
delete from downloads folder
move Handbraked copy to itunes
delete copy
change type from home video to movieeurgh

Anyone upgraded their MacBook Pro to SSD? Thinking about it. Worthy upgrade with regards to speed etc?
Took out my optical drive on a 2009 macbook, kept the hard drive plus added a 480gb SSD with system etc.
Much faster, only issue is that it also runs much hotter.
Enough to be painful on legs in summer.
Worth doing.

how did you copy your existing HD over to the new one? easy to do?
also...is it such a good idea to place the SSD in the optical drive slot? will it kill your machine?

has anyone had any experience with hybrid hard drives? having solid state for applications seems good, don't necessarily need as fast speeds for my large mp3 collection films etc, and ssd is ££££

Guy at work has one, says it's good. not as good as ssd though.

yeah the "sshd" (as they nicknamed) are close, and if you only have one drive bay + need space it's the way to go.
I just put one in my PS4... not that I can really see much difference there

cool, I only have a core 2 duo mbp so want to speed it up without spending stupid money.
-
• #5217
Had one in my mbp before it died. Can't say I saw much of a difference between it and the previous hd, but that was probably more due to the age of the machine and it really needing a clean install of os x more than the drive itself.

I put one in a c2d machine and it went from useless to working ok. Which was quite an improvement.

I used carbon copy cloner, worked very well.
The only issue I found was that the drive with the OS on it needed to be in the original bay. First time round they were the other way and it wouldn't boot. Swapped them and all was good.
I bought an external drive box for the optical drive but I could never get it to play nicely, both in terms of the drive in the box and in terms of recognition from the mac itself.
I think in one year I've missed the drive maybe twice...

install plex and plexconnect so you can view your plex library from your apple tv. Its freaking awesome. No more transcoding bollocks.
-
• #5222
I thought Plex would solve all my home media centre problems but 1) it is fucking impenetrable, I-have-no-idea-what-I'm-doing.jpg and 2) you have to pay for it now?!?
-
• #5223
£2.99! Outrageous.jpg
-
• #5224
No! Isn't there a monthly subscription now? I'm probably just being dim, I know...
I have Plex installed on my MBP, Smart TV and Nexus 5 but I still haven't figured out how I get my devices to see the films on my MBP or external drive...
