iPhone is dead, in my pocket when I got pushed into a swimming pool. Replacing is not a problem, and thankfully I'm insured.
But,
Is there a way to get my photos off the dead one? It won't power up at all, but presumably the picture data is still on the flash memory inside.
The standard answer from the apple store is that it's not salvageable, but surely there is a way of extracting my holiday snaps. I'm sure they'd be able to do it if I was a terrorist suspect...photo stream?

Gave up with a torrent of SL which was taking days. Discs should arrive this week anyway. But jesus i can't believe the OS/software compatibility issues you get with Mac. Just found out I can't run icloud on anything older than Lion.
I have a manky piece of shit 7+ year old Toshiba laptop with MS Vista on which I'm perefctly able to run the latest versions of itunes with the cloud etc. How on earth can Apple justify that? It's bananas.
This is the #1 thing that fucks me off with apple products, the forced obsolescence. Especially now with App store where you can only DL the latest versions of things, so if you've got an older iphone and you want say a compatible version of Evernote (which fuckin exist, the were widely available a few years ago) you cannot get one for love or money.
Unlike regular computer applications where you can just DL/Buy an older version (vendors tend to still offer them, even if there's limited updates/support) but with Apple controlling the only way to get software (apart from jailbreak) it's no longer possible.Massively cunty thing to do and will do them no favours in the long term, treating their customers like an endless cash reserve.
I like their products/user interfaces but their attitude sucks. -

Couldn't agree more. Don't really want the latest OS on my macbook.

As my iPhone 4 draws obsolete, and I'll be looking to get a new laptop soon, my eye is wondering to what other options are avaliable to me. Had a look at the chromebook pixel, but it doesn't have the processing power I'm after (that say, and Air does).

Asus Zenbook?

Pixel has more processing power than the air doesn't it?

Do you not have a phone backup in itunes? When you get the new one assuming you sync'd recently it should ask if you want to restore from backup and set it up the same as the old one with all content intact.
Yes, It's all backed up except for my photos from South Africa last week.
According to the nice girl in the Apple store, its a fairly common problem with the iPhone. The memory is built directly onto the motherboard, so there is no way of extracting the chip and placing it into another one if the phone gets damaged. -

oh god ok, the saga continues.
installed SL which doesn't come with ilife or garage band or nuffink. i haz no software. you need to buy them from the mac app store. i have an apple id and am logged into the store (my itunes is working fine and i can order shit from there) but since i installed SL every time i look at anything in the mac app store i don't get the buy now button i only get the "view in mac app store" button which takes me to the mac app store home page.... and round and round we go.
how thick am i being this time?

ok. just tried buying some random hardware. it's quite happy for me to order ipads and whatnot. everything hardware related has the "buy it now button". but iLIfe 11, Garageband or even the Mountain Lion upgrade which it KEEPS directing me to whatever I search for just have the "upgrade now" button which just goes back to the product page with the 'view in mac app store" button on it which goes back to the mac app store home page. I understand that I can only buy discs of L and ML as you can't apparently download till you have ML (*sigh) but why is it not telling me anything helpful, like what I actually need to do?

If you want a windows equivalent to MacBook air the lenovo X1 is pretty close.

When I went to bed last night I had a moment when I thought "This is my Randonneur isn't it?"
It may yet prove to be.

You need to install all the SL updates first. Then it might "just work"
My Dell Mini 10v Hackintosh would appear to be very much on the verge of expiring. Nasty graunchy noises and corrupt display. Boo.
My only reliable mac is now a VMWare image. -

it's just working.

Bought a genuine one from ebay - had to pay 20euro postage, but still came out at 47quid so not bad.
Spenceey - If you make a genius bar appointment and say that you found out the cracking was a known fault, they should replace it for free, so long as its not older than 2007.
I know Fixedcheese did it recently
Don't know if this has been answered already... They will replace the casing if the mac is less than 5 years old. If it is more then it is classed as 'vintage' and they won't do it for free. Might still do it though. Mine was only two months away from being too old, so timed it just right.
-
• #4073
Yeah mine was an early 2009 model. Not quite vintage. Still going strong though.
Although I'm thinking of buying a Chromebook.
