  • What do you mean?

  • Could it be an 802.11 issue, is N the standard now? And any machine with a slower rating logging on makes the network their speed rather than the faster one..

  • I've just read on line it could be a problem with the channels too.

    I'll try that out tonight.

  • Ah crap back to step one.

  • It's a new network - literally we've had broadband set up in our house for just over a week now.

  • Recepit from?

  • Strange I'm at work having just picked the mac up and the speed is much faster.

Could just be my wifi at home.

  • ^^^^^^^^^ meant to say thanks to Corny and Amey for the RAM and SSD tipz. And the very pleasant and excellently named Nelson Crespo for an excellent sale. The '09 iMac is in amazing nick.

I am in conflicting software version purgatory at the moment but that's no fault of fthe vendor. He's restored it to factory settings which included Leopard. I tunes won't work on that as it's saying it needs Quicktime 7.5.5 or later. Slightly confused as to why all original installed versions of things won't play nicely with each other but anyway...There's not a download for that alone so I assumed I need to to update OSX (the new itunes won't work with Leopard either). Apparently I can't upgrade to Mountain Lion without first updating to Snow Leopard. Okay fine...

No biggie. It's just a lot more of a faff than I had been lead to believe it should be. Took me a couple of hours to google all the various incarntions of things I need and how to get there last night.

Anyway, sure i'll get it sorted tonight.

  • I "may" have a copy of SL as I paid for the download and burnt it to disk.

I purchased it last night thanks for the offer though man.

    Arf. Yes. good point.

  • I has SL disk. You're in Hackney right? PM me if you want to collect it tonight.

  • Thanks photoben but i'm in SE23 these days. Should be ready for me when I get home anyway. Cheers all.

  • Thanks people reset some hptc setting thing and it works fine again!

  • Need to make mp3 files from old audio tapes, with G5 mac (PowerPC) running Leopard (10.5.8).
Can somebody suggest a free / free to try software to do the job?
    So far I found 'Audacity'.

    Thanks!

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm trying to download SL. I found a few torrents and downloaded uTorrent and Transmission. Whenever I try and open the downloaded file in either of them it (and everything else in the downloads folder) is greyed out. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

  • Screen shot? (cmd + shift + 3)

  • sorry for the noobs. I/m a mac dunce (this being my first). All downloaded files are greyed out wherever they're saved.

  • Transmission will be looking for a .torrent file, the thing you download from the net, which then starts off the download of the bigger item such as the SL disc image (.dmg) file.

So all those things are greyed out as none is a torrent file.

  • told you i was a dunce. thanks. *keeps looking....

  • No worries, I've got two parents who've both recently moved to macs to preserve my sanity, but I still get a lot of questions. Then the same questions a few days later. Ah, technology.

  • cheers. sorted now.

  • Gave up with a torrent of SL which was taking days. Discs should arrive this week anyway. But jesus i can't believe the OS/software compatibility issues you get with Mac. Just found out I can't run icloud on anything older than Lion.

I have a manky piece of shit 7+ year old Toshiba laptop with MS Vista on which I'm perefctly able to run the latest versions of itunes with the cloud etc. How on earth can Apple justify that? It's bananas.

  • iPhone is dead, in my pocket when I got pushed into a swimming pool. Replacing is not a problem, and thankfully I'm insured.
    But,
Is there a way to get my photos off the dead one? It won't power up at all, but presumably the picture data is still on the flash memory inside.
The standard answer from the apple store is that it's not salvageable, but surely there is a way of extracting my holiday snaps. I'm sure they'd be able to do it if I was a terrorist suspect...

  • Commit terror atrocity, reap the benefits?
