Exactly what I did a while ago... Still lost a few tracks but saved me half a day of my life...

  • Replacing a macbook battery - anyone bought one not from the apple store that doesn't cost a ton?

or should I just take the hit?

  • i bought an ebay one and it was a £15 paperweight, looked for all intents and purposes like it was charging only to lose power the second i unplugged it.

ended up buying a new apple one from apple store instead. had the macbook since 2007 so £100 on repairs isn't that terrible in 5.5years

  • This is what Im thinking. I was thinking that a battery isn't really the area to try and use a cheap knockoff.

  • Rather annoyingly my macbook has started to crack on the palm rest.

Are Apple still likely to replace this? Talk about a pain in the arse.

  • go easy on the crack #euph

Bought a genuine one from ebay - had to pay 20euro postage, but still came out at 47quid so not bad.

Spenceey - If you make a genius bar appointment and say that you found out the cracking was a known fault, they should replace it for free, so long as its not older than 2007.

I know Fixedcheese did it recently

  • dooks you should also consider an SSD upgrade; here is a link to the guide and Vertex 3 would be a good balance of performance and value, it comes with 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, PM me if you want to borrow those vacuum cups
Also; don't worry about thermal sensor on the hard drive just use a TRIM enabler and SSD fan control later.

From a dealer or private? If a dealer do you have a link please.

    Thanks

  • Sorted out at the genius bar tomorrow.

  • The weirdest thing is happening on my computer - I'll try to explain but it's a bit confusing.

I have 2 macbook pros, one about 4-5years old and a new one which I am transitioning to.

I have to give an updated version of a presentation that I gave a few months ago, so I copied ONLY the .ppt from the old computer to the new one to work on it. On one of the slides, I show a figure of a graph copied from a pdf, however on the new computer rather than the graph I see the text that comes just below it. my first thought was that I was viewing a larger image that had moved within a smaller text box and that I just needed to reposition the window, but I couldn't get this to work - there didn't seem to be any more to the image than the area of text that was displayed. Whats even more weird is that there isn't a copy of the original pdf report anywhere on the computer so I don't know where it is retrieving the text from?

So, I went back to the old computer to check the original and sure enough, everything is as it is meant to be with the graph displaying nicely. So, I copied a version of the original pdf report onto the new computer with the intention of just making a new slide from scratch. Now, when I select and copy the graph out of the pdf and try to paste it, I get the block of text beneath instead. VERY FRUSTRATING.

I've now tried it on other pdfs and when I select and copy any rectangular section of pdf, the area that ends up being transposed is not the selected area but an area a couple of inches below it [actually it's always the area at the bottom left of the page].

    Any suggestions?

Afraid the battery was a private listing - finished at 5.45am :)

What are you using to view the pdf and what tool are you using to select the area?

  • I'm using the rectangular selection tool in Preview.

I've now discovered that this happens in all pdfs: when I select and copy an area of the page using "rectangular selection" the area that eventually gets transposed is the same shape and size as I intended but is always cut out of the bottom left hand side of the relevant page. This only happens for pdfs not pictures selected in the same way.

What puzzles me most is in the original example: I had selected and copied a graph in a pdf report on the old computer (snow leopard??) and it all worked as expected, but when I moved the .ppt to the new computer (lion) and the graph was replaced by text... At the time, that text (the original pdf report) wasn't stored anywhere on the new computer... it existed only on the old one!?

  • No idea why its happening to be honest. Try using adobe reader to copy from the pdf, it has a direct selection tool that should be able to pick up what you want, and of that doesn't work then theres the snapshot tool that grabs a selected area. Shouldn't be affect by what ever change is messing it up for you now.

  • Just to ask you lot one thing.

When Wi-Fi in my place of work is perfect for PC and Android OS, why do you call me to 'fix' the Wi-Fi when Apple OS doesn't 'work'?

    .I don't 'do' Apple.

  • A half competent IT person should be able to set up Wi-Fi for both, it's not that hard is it? Suggest you change your attitude and 'do' whatever's best for your clients.

  • Wi-Fi is there. I know it works on the hardware side.

Apple users obviously don't know how their software works.

You could evoke the 'Sprirt of Jobs' to help you?

  • A half competent IT person should be able to set up Wi-Fi for both, it's not that hard is it?

OK, what is the difference between them?

Is Android, MS, and OSX Wi-Fi different? Surely they are a 'standard'?

  • Also, I'm not an IT person. I'm a Sparks.

I get calls from so called IT proffesionals to fix their stuff.

I turn it off and turn it on again.

    That's how I roll...

  • I turn it off and turn it on again.

    That's how I troll...

    .

  • Macbook case has been fixed by Apple - free of charge , nice one!

Another question - why is my wifi on my Mac incredible slow? Our wireless at home is quick, on mobiles and xbox but the Mac is incredible slow.

    Any ideas?

  • Maybe you've connected to PC or Android WiFi by mistake....
