Less that 18 months. I've got Applecare but it won't come back until after my deadline! It's sitting in rice at the moment, next to mum's aga - just in case it is water :-(

^ Is it working now?
I just bought one of these Moshi ClearGuard keyboard protectors for my MacBook Pro:
Really impressed by how discrete and snug it is. Doesn't cover the trackpad, just the keys.

does it detract from key feedback at all?

Slows typing a little but not so much that it's an issue. If I do need to type any lengthy pieces I can just take it off (it slips on and off very easily) and you can hardly see it when it's in place. I am really happy with it. Free delivery too from Apple Store.

I've been told that a used mac mini is what i'm after for home.
decent price for a decent spec machine which will run current indesign, illustrator et al.
if this is the case, what do I need to look out for? happy to spend some money upgrading but I don't want it to get left behind like my G5 did.
thanks

if someone was going to transfer a huge volume of music files from a pc to a mac for me, what drive should i buy, and how should it be formatted?

Interesting question ^ Mac drives are FAT32 and PC's aren't right? But memory sticks are multiplatform.
Be interested to hear the answer. -

Format exFAT.
Way too much info missing to give you a proper answer but assuming you're not going to be using Thunderbolt or eSATA and that they are overkill for what you need. Go for as fast a connection as possible in your budget, if time is factor. You'll want to use Firewire 800, USB3, Firewire 400 then after that USB 2 or 1. Some drives have more than one interface but your PC/Mac will dictate what you need.
We don't know how much data you need to shift, what OS's are involved, your budget, time you have blah blah blah. A huge amount for some people is 500GB and others 20+TB...

Na Mac's are HFS+ (Mac OS Extended). FAT32 would be fine for this too BUT remember there is a 4GB file limit so its not good for large video files etc but for loads of small files (mp3, aac etc) it'll be fine.
In fact if dancing james has time its worth testing both FAT32 & exFAT because some people report reduced transfer speeds on exFAT formatted drives but I haven't had any issues. You'll need to format the drive on the Mac for exFAT.

what 4tb drive would you suggest? and how do i do this formatting malarkey?

OSX supports NTFS. If you can get a disk that's got firewire/thunderbolt, that's typically quicker than USB.

Haha like most of the population then! Ok so a fair amount of data then. If you've got a few hours to play with then its doable and you'll tend to be advised to go with firewire over USB because it has better sustained data transfer rates. (Generally speaking without wanting to get into FW800 vs USB3 chat).
You need to look at your mac mini, check the ports and see if you have FW800 or FW400 on it. The ports on the mac mini's have changed over time, for example, the newest ones have Thunderbolt, FW800 & USB3!
Then do the same for the PC and you'll get the lay of the land. For example if you by a external hard drive that has FW800 & USB2. You might find that you can plug your drive into the mac mini using FW800 and copy the files pretty fast. Lets say 6hrs. Then you go to the PC and it only has USB2. You would then be able to copy the files off of the drive but it will take longer than 6hrs because USB2 has a lower sustained datarate than FW800 (& FW400 for that matter).
If your Mac & PC had a thunderbolt drive you could get it all done crazy fast but it would cost you more. As always with this computer lark there are millions of ways to skin a cat but its best not to chat networking and other crazy stuff like that and just keep it simple(ish).
If you are sure no files are over 4GB then use FAT32 if you're nervous about the speed hit, exFAT otherwise.
Get a drive which can plug into both computers. Copy the files off of one computer to the drive. Then copy them off of the drive to the other computer. The cost and time will but the variables you'll have to consider. I tend to use G-Tech for external drives but its sounds like they'd be overkill for this.

OSX does support NTFS, as read only though so I wouldn't bother formatting your own new drive as NTFS. Just imho.
You can use Disk Utility to format the drive. When you get the drive, plug it in. Then hold down cmd+spacebar, type disk and hit enter. Disk Utility will open. Let me google a guide for you: http://bit.ly/ZVATRz

i probably would have struggled to work out what to put into google! so how ought i format the drive for a pc to dump all the information but to make it readable and writeable when attached to my mac
-
• #3821
would this be suitable?
If both computers have USB3 then it's ok. Otherwise you'll be getting USB2 datarates (slower than firewire). Noone will be able to tell you which drive to get without knowing what ports the computers have. I am lucky enough not have to deal with this stuff and when I do I use G-Tech or Promise drives. Jigsaw24 have a fair few options on their website.

Like I said in the other post, format it FAT32 or exFAT and it'll work on both as read & write.

I didn't get an answer in AQA thread so, should I jailbreak my iPhone?
Only real reason I have for doing so would be to change my "slide to unlock" text to something stupid in a stupid colour. Are there other benefits? Will I void my warranty/AppleCare?

One of my fellow inmates wants to sell me her two month old white 32GB iPad 2 with Wi-Fi+3G and 3 years' warranty for £400.
Her dad is buying her the latest one.
Not sure whether to trying knocking it down. Could really do with one here and for work when I get out, but I am not exactly raking it in right now.
Hmmm...
