  • All my old files and applications are on my new MBP now, only took me three days... Thanks for the tips, ladies and gentlemenz...

I now wanna up the memory from 4Gb to 8Gb, Apple wanted an extra £240 for the privilege whereas I can buy the memory from Amazon for less than £40 and do it myself... It's easy enough to do on new MBPs, isn't it? Any pitfalls I should be aware of?

FYI your new MBP supports 8GB sticks, I got two Corsair 8GB sticks for 100 quid!
    part number: CMSO8GX3M1A1333C9

  • Anyone know an easy way of transferring music from an iPad to a MacBook? Can't drag the files......

cant you use iCloud for this? (not sure if it does all your music or only iTunes purchased..)

suppose you could just put non iTunes music in your docs and let it sync

  • Pretty sure there is an automatic "transfer purchases" option somewhere in iTunes...

O rly? I may have to send the 2 x 4Gb memory back then... Just as good as any other memory i.e. Kingston etc?

  • yep - made the innocent mistake of buying something from iTunes and downloading to ipad thinking it would show up in my purchases on the Macbook - no dice :(

    It should.
You should have a "purchased on [device name]" folder in the iTunes window
perhaps you haven't got automatic syncing enabled.

yeah I use Corsair in all my machines, never had a problem, use their SSD's too no complaints

  • Hael, don't suppose you have an old SSD for sales?

  • fraid not, I was thinking of upgrading my 60Gb one, but Im guessing 60GB is useless to anyone now days ;)

you keeping your eye on ebuyer for cheap ones ?

  • That could work actually... I don't need extra space just enough to run OS and apps... I bought a Mini in the end so already have a 500 in it... keep me posted?

  • @chrisbmx I've got a Corsair 128gb ssd that I upgraded a while back, been reconditioned, yours posted for 60 notes. PM me if you're interested.

    I'll take a look, cheers

  • Bingo, I clicked on purchased, downloads and there it was under 'not on this computer' available to download - can't believe I didn't spot this before. Cheers all

  • Anyone got any idea what a dirty white MacBook 1.83 core duo with 2 gigs might be worth these days? Just upgraded my GF to a 13 inch MacBook pro.

  • http://www.mac2sell.net/ for a rough guide

  • My tax year ends on Wednesday so I need to spend while I can, I need a new back-up drive...

Do I go networked storage? Or do I just get a 2Tb external drive and turn my old MBP into a server and build a home network? Is that possible? Rcecomendations? Too complicated for an old fart (90s Mac Guru) like me to figure out?

    I'd go with https://www.crashplan.com/consumer/store.vtl
But if you want a local drive to back up to I would go with network storage, sell your old mac and get some money for it while its still worth something ;) no point setting up your old mac as a server - with the NAS you can also use some of the space to store movies, music etc

    Buy a NAS enclosure:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Networking/cat/Network-Attached-Storage/subcat/Desktop-NAS-2-bay - £55

Then put two of any size drive you like in there:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Storage/cat/Hard-Drive---Internal

comes with a large font setup guide, you'll be fine

  • Hael, kid_scruff sorted me out with a SSD... (thanks again!) now I just need the flex cable to whack in my Mini... any ideas or just get one off ebay? (They seam hard to get).

    Cheeeeers...

I've thought a lot about these online back up things. I use dropbox a lot, and that works great for current stuff I need to back up (work, photos, etc)

For a everything backup though, I'd need about 750GB's worth of storage, and even if it's financially viable in the cloud, restoring it would take days, and Virgin Media won't be happy...

  • Maplin are selling a 2Tb Seagate USB external drive for £99, I picked one up for £93 with a voucher then stumped up another £30 for a Firewire 800 cradle for it... Lorra storage for pennies...

  • @ Hael: MY old MBP is next to worthless, both the camera and SuperDrive are fuxxored... Gonna plug a 40" plasma into it and use it as a media centre...

single disk tho, what if that fails? ;)

  • Good point, I'm gonna look into some cloud storage as well...

  • I just turned an old dell into an ubuntu media server, i highly recommend Plexmedia (server and client) its free, runs on os x, windows and linux. Awesome interface.
