  • Why not use Dropbox? (Something will have changed in your network for the machines to lose visibility of each other.)

Failing that, ask around and see what's changed/been updated.

  • Can't use actual drop box, i work with technophobes, explaining shared documents was enough of a struggle.
A password was put on the wifi network thats all, the majority of the machines are wired connections.

  • Ziska, get ahold of data rescue, cost a bit butb allows you to recover files that have been accidentally deleted, you'll have to stop using the hd of course, and need another computer with a large enough hard drive for any data that may be recovered..

    Thanks Corne x

  • does anyone have any basic mac software for making music, i'm thinking along the lines of fruityloops etc. it would need to run on a g4 powermac running tiger. i've posted this in the electronic musician thread as well but i figured might be worth posting here as well.

  • Don't you get Garage band as standard in ilife?

It will come with enough loops to get you started.

  • anyone got a fat32 formatted usb hard drive I can borrow for a couple of days, want to swap out the hard drive on my ps3, and need to copy everything across and my how to guide says you need to copy onto a fat32 formatted hard drive.

so anyone got one I can grab this week. I'm off work so can come grab it from you. Let me know..

won't that take an age, i remember copying some stuf over once it took ages for just one film. Could you not connect the new and old hardrive to a single desktop and transfer that way? I'm sure its not that simple or CarbonCopy the old to the new one, this would be quickest i think. Just some alternative ideas.

  • just want a portable external drive that's fat32 formatted, it's going nowhere near my mac, as I need to copy about 10gb maybe 20gb of info off the ps3 and then copy it back onto the new drive when its in situ..

  • Derp derp derp derp derp derp? Derp...

  • Just had an iPad 2 delivered to the office, so that'll be the boss out of my hair for the rest of the day, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

  • Anyone got experience tethering a mac air/similar with iphone 3g. have been using pdanet with my jailbroken 3g phone..no issues on pc, but cant seem to get it to find the web on my mac

    Any ideas

    Thanks

  • question:
I've bought 2x 1TB drives to install in my mac pro and I want to make one my boot drive. Do I just copy the boot drive to the new clean drive? Or is there something else that is needed to be done. I'm thinking I probably need to boot from my original boot CD and then copy my boot drive, but I'm not sure.

    any help appreciated..

  • You should be able to just clone your drives over.

You can boot from any drive you like with the MAC. a benfit of the UNIX based OS.

  • cornelius, you can use this and a usb to SATA cable:

    http://www.bombich.com/

Then you should be able to connect that drive and start with the Option key pressed. Should bring up all available drives.

  • suggestions for better alternatives to mac mail? Drives me mad.

Not Entourage or anything made by microsoft.

I've been using Sparrow for a while. Works great for my simple gmail + uni email setup.

  • My iPhone doesn't automatically sync my work email even though it's all set up to my Mail. So in Mail a list of my accounts looks like this:

but the list of accounts which I can sync with my phone looks like this (in iTunes):

Has anyone else had this problem and solved it? I guess it's because its an Exchange 2007 account and these don't go so well with Mac stuff. I've tried to add it manually but that doesn't work. :(

  • does anyone want a free macsafe charger 60w. cable is broken near the magnetic plug and apple replaced it. if you can fix it its yours.

  • Anyone have any Illustrator knowledge?

I have united an object and want to use it to divide objects below.
The object below is just a large square, bigger than the united object on top.
The united object is definitely one piece, all separate components pre uniting were overlapping.

Every time I try to divide objects below I get an error message saying 'the filter cannot complete because more than one object is selected'
This seems odd because definitely only one object is selected. It's not grouped with anything and neither is the square beneath it, not that that would have anything to do with it.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Cheers.

  • When dividing (or crop masking) objects, you have to use one path.

This can be in the form of many objects that have been joined together as a compound path (especially good if your masking shape resembles a doughnut or letter forms, etc) or as shapes that have been merged together (such as a circle overlapping a rectangle).

Try ungrouping the upper most object and merging the shapes together with a compound path (or simple "merge")... you should then be able to mask/divide any objects below it, etc.

Groups are not appropriate for dividing/cropping as illustrator doesn't know how to treat the overlapping shapes (in which order) when adding a new shape to the mix.

If you explain what you mean by "united" shape, I can probably explain it a bit more?

  • Sorry, I hovered over the merge button and it said 'unite' so I thought that was it was meant to be called.

Solved the problem now as well. It was an A that I wanted to divide below. I just merged out the negative space in the A and then it worked. Added the negative space back in afterwards.

    Thanks very much Jono

  • That sounds about right, I think about it as grouping (non-destructive) and merging (destructive), merging can be done in many different ways, one of which is probably unite, gotcha.

Select and expand/ungroup your upper most shape until it's obvious (in the layers/appearance) that you have a single path. Then use as you see fit (for further merging, crops, removing from another shape, etc)?

Negative space is best dealt with using compound paths (Object -> Compound Path -> Make) compound paths work on letterforms, etc, as you described. Have a play...

  • Hmmm I did fiddle about with compound paths but I wasn't 100% sure what I was doing, it seemed to have little effect. Although like I said, I wasn't too sure what I was expecting it to do.

  • Help Needed.

Looking for this graphics card ATI RADEON HD 5770 1GB for my 2007 Mac Pro. Have seen it online for anywhere between 190 and 270 pounds.

Hoping to find it cheaper, as funds are a bit tight at the moment. My one has gone tits up and its not long for this earth. So if anyone knows where I can get it cheaper, has one going spare and wants rid. Let me know.

  • Cornelius are you sure you mean a 5770 for £190?

    It's here for £100,

  • Alternatively the 6870 is a better card all round if you've got the extra cash, £152
