  • ^^ done some research not really an option, dont really want to spend £500+ on new phone though ><

  • Apple computers vs Apple corp agreements? Hence why beatles stuff won't be on itunes.

  • The appification of OSX has begun. 10.7 will have an app store (to make things easy for you! Yeah right!), and I bet you that 10.8 will not let you install software easily unless it's in the app store.

Really, you reckon? There is a huge base of creative professionals using Macs, if they did this they'd lose them all. I know most of their market is now consumers who buy them because they are easy/aspirational/look cool, but do you really think they'd risk alienating the market which kept them going through the lean times and on which their perceived coolness is based?

If you look at print designers, for example, they will mostly have CDs of QuarkXPress/InDesign/Photoshop/Illustrator etc. When they buy a new machine they're not going to want to buy new software from the app store too.

  • If Apple did this there'd be a crack within 24hrs... The iPod and the iPhone have made Apple the hugely succesful corporate behemoth they are today... They don't give a fuck about us poor design professionals that have been using their products for 20 years and more... I wish there was an alternative*...

  • Fox, I think that's totally the risk, because they figure that doing stuff for that market makes them many times more the money that they were making of the niche they had before ... my 2p

Teenslain, there might be a crack, but that's essentially having to repair a broken device. Sucks. In germany this is even punishable by law now, due to the new anti-piracy legislation. Wasn't there something similar on the map here?

  • Hi Guys,

I'm trying to get my old G4 powerbook ready for a show where it will be controlling the work and I just went to do a fresh OS install and I'm buggered if I can find my 10.5 os discs, they're not where they should be, sigh.

Doe anyone have a non intel specific version of 10.4 or 10.5 that they wouldn't mind me using?

    Thanks,

    Ben

  • Oh, and they created WebKit.

Not exactly. It was a branch of an existing KDE project.

  • [strike]It's not like it's 1933[/strike] Bad analogy... :-) It's only a computer. I don't care as long as it does what I want it to do.

As for the conspiracy and trust theories, no software/hardware big player is totally innocent. What Google "gives back to the Community" it takes back with our personal freedom of information.

Surely you've got that the wrong way around.. they're making information free alright...

Apple's OS runs on Intel chipset, no?

    Build a Hackintosh.

So, if the make an App Shop based system there will be a jailbreak which is not illegal ayway. Apple would probably go ahead with it only to bind the consumers, but pros will still go for the jail breaking option. I just can't imagine running The PS or Quark on the PC. it's just wrong.

Yea, you can always put spoilers on Nissan Micra...

Ha, precisely like putting a 'gel' front on a beige tower when the first i-macs came out. There has always been a complete misunderstanding of Mac's appeal from the PC fraternity.

  • I like macs, because they are so well made (even my new iMac had fucking yellow tint on the bottom of the screen).
They are all silent, don't overheat, don't freeze...
People say, that Mac are overpriced, which is a one big bullshit. The no-brand PCs are cheap.
Try Sony Vaio all-in-one and compare to a 21" iMac...

I would agree with you but my imac is now only showing the spinning rainbow of death.

    Sent from my powerbook.

  • My PC Samsung 17" is dead, because the screen dies after 15 minutes (before it was just flickering). I took care of it. My Asus EEE PC was also dead, but revived through the restore disc. Fuck 'em PC computers.
    Saying that...
My MacBook has big bright strip across the scree, but I suspect my daughter, as she likes to walk on laptops. Anyway, the lead is flexy and it's very easy to damage the LCD on the edge of the keyboard.
Also, the ergonomy of the MacBook unibody is bit shit, as the edges are very sharp. They look nice, but my wrists suffer after about 30 mins... My old iMac freezes when the Flash is involved. My new iMac has some silly warm tint on the bottom of the screen. My Mac Mini was good, though. It would be even better if it had any kind of output to VGA from the Mini-Display Port.

  • Think I need to replace the hard drive and reinstall from time machine. Sounds like a job from mission impossible though as I need screen suckers and air compressors apparently.

  • You need Apple Care. On sale from Currys.

  • How hard and expensive is it to build a hackintosh? I'm looking to get a new mac soon. Would love a Mac Pro, but budget isn't that big unfortunately. Is it worth it? Read a bit of the OSx86 site, seems hard work.

@ EEI and mr Lunch thats a bunch of crap - hackintoshes give you the flexibility that you can't get with a pre-built mac at a more affordable price with the ability to easily upgrade. Some people aren't fashion victims and actually enjoy the OS and not just the box it comes in.

Just find something that 'agree' with the system specification really.

    the old Dell Mini 10 can be run with OS X because the hardware were similar;

    Fashion victim? Fuck off, Seb.
Like I said, cheap is only when you build a computer yourself. I actually trust Apple people can build better then me and I build quite few computers in my life. I also like things which look good and have all the right to do so.
I could ask you the same - why do you need all those fancy frames when you can buy a Bike from Halfords? It has two wheels and goes forward...

  • Is there a way to multi-unlock files or over-ride lock files to delete them? I need to clear out a big archive and it has loads of locked files.
    Meh.
