No, the problem with the app store is the draconian rules for submission - no beta developing, nothing that can "crash" or is unstable ...

If I buy a device, I want to be able to install whatever I want. After all I just dropped 1.5k for a machine.
Ok, I will admit that even I am split personality, as I have bought a Kindle and that is pretty locked down as well. But Apples constant striving for the worse is really pissing me off.
Started with their shit support and the encouraged upgrade for apple care, but the appification is the WORST. THE WORST.
They even try to lock down which programming languages you can use. WTF????And unlike other major players they don't seem to give a whole lot back to the Community in terms of Open Source.
Compare that to Google that have open sourced so much stuff I can't even make a list.I am working in IT, I buy a new machine every year or so, it'll usually be top of the range stuff, and apple are just not getting my money anymore.
-
• #1104
do you think they care?
they are selling more products year on year.
they are increasing market share
there profit per unit is higher than their competitors.
they have shit loads of cash in the bank (so much cash there is talk of them buying a big brand like sony).not everyone is a developer or wants to mess around with different OS's in fact it's the opposite end of the market that they mostly cater for.

Do you think I care whether they care?
I think much of the Apple "cult" status had come from tech heads and early adopters being drawn to the platform for the same reasons as I have, creating some bandwagon effect. I hope they'll all jump off as well and leave the platform to consumers ... then it can go the same way like Windows has done ...

i guess people are attracted to the 'brand' for different reasons.
for me:
ease of use.
productivity.
reliability.
the kind of software i use is better developed/implemented for mac.
it looks really cool.
Stephen Fry has one. -

You want to be able to install whatever you want on your Mac? Good news: you can, and always will be able to. The whole OS is based on Unix, and you will always be able to develop and install whatever you want on it.
Also, to say that Apple gives nothing to open source projects is nonsense. Head of WebKit? Odds are that you're using it right now even if you weren't aware of it.
-

Ehrm ... Sparky, you wait. They're creating a closed platform right now.
As for webkit, of course I am aware of it. They've taken an Open Source project and forked it to create their own browser. Would be pretty grotty if they'd not contribute to that one ... so what else do they support? And if you take a step back, can you deny that they're pushing a model very hard in which you as a developer will have to go through their app store, agreeing to their terms?
iPhone and iPad are the money machines for them, so they think "can we do the same with the OSX platform" ...
The thing that really gets my goat is that most apps are really just a re-packaged subset of what a website does for free, but you have to pay for it. And if you want to have control over the devices (reads: fix it), you have to jailbreak it (reads: repair it).
My bet is that in 10.8 or 10.9 they'll have exactly that for any desktop or laptop: Locked down, and you have to jailbreak to gain root. Thanks, but no thanks.

Surely your anger over os x being locked down is completely moot until they actually do it, no? Forgive the obvious question but didn't they announce the app store for os x 10.7 by saying that you would definitely still be able to run and install whatever you wanted?
-
• #1110
They'd never get away with locking down the OS like that.
-
• #1111
Oh, and they created WebKit.
-
• #1112
Well, of course they SAY that ...
I am pretty much with Ron Gilbert on this:
For you Apple apologists claiming Apple will never lock down the Mac, step one is in place and you all let it happen.
Step 1: Mac App Store + 3rd party apps. Step 2: User option to disallow 3rd party apps for "safety". Step 3: Remove that option.
Think about it: Effectively they are pushing the step away from web standards and the web as such so they can sell you their apps.
Question to you:
Why would I keep buying hardware and use development tools of a company that has turned the boat towards somewhere that I find a pretty sad destination? -
• #1113
Sparky, they forked KHTML first, no?
-
• #1114
[strike]It's not like it's 1933[/strike] Bad analogy... :-) It's only a computer. I don't care as long as it does what I want it to do.
As for the conspiracy and trust theories, no software/hardware big player is totally innocent. What Google "gives back to the Community" it takes back with our personal freedom of information.

The difference I feel is that Apple always tried to look like the good guy, the eco-warrior, the freedom fighter whether Google, being Google, doesn't.

ORLY? They're all the same at first - nerds-idealists sacrificing their sex life to save the future. Not long time ago Google was an underdog struggling against Goliaths like Yahoo and MSN (shit search engine build in in every office computer by default), Netscape (do you remember?) and AOL.
And now? You don't play by their rules and you cease to exist online. -

What about wikipedia? AFAIK, Jimmy Wales doesn't make a fortune with wiki.

Isn't Yahoo supporting Wikipedia?

Wait until he does. He should be beatified by the pope already.

There's this trend to acquire something cool to be down with the kids. Flickr for example. Or YouTube. Then slowly push new regulations regarding copyrights and data handling and such without a full takeover... And nothing is what it seems anymore. Just like with all those "indie" labels in the late eighties acquired or often created from scratch by the majors. You buy from the alt box in the shop, but really lining pockets of Sony Music or Warner.

Secondly google provide by far the best API and services out there. I want to reverse GeoCode ... a REST request to there server which is ridiculously easy to do.
Microsofts API is confusing ... and Yahoo mapping stuff is just shit.

hey i lost my iphone yesterday and cant afford to buy one from uk if i get one from us would i be able to get it unlocked? and use it here?
Point being, Steam is a downloadable content site/software, the desciption of the 'application store' is pretty similar.
Steam have some pretty good indies games, like Penumbra, the downside is Apple's stupid strict control of their market may not allowed much indies through.
