  • Yea, you can always put spoilers on Nissan Micra...

Macs use Intel chipsets. I think you missed the point.

  • Whicksie:

You can check the Sharing & Permissions via cmd+i, it's at the bottom and you usually have to expand the info ... do so on the enclosing folder and all contained items, and you should be able to set them to read/write for yourself.

  • Joni, "Super User" access, you could potentially delete every file permanently, so tread carefully and maybe do some guides first:

  • I like macs, because they are so well made (even my new iMac had fucking yellow tint on the bottom of the screen).
They are all silent, don't overheat, don't freeze...
People say, that Mac are overpriced, which is a one big bullshit. The no-brand PCs are cheap.
Try Sony Vaio all-in-one and compare to a 21" iMac...

My HP was cheaper than the equiv. Macbook, never overheated, never froze and is still running its OEM Windows XP.

Remind me which company had to recall laptops due to exploding batteries?

  • My PC Samsung 17" is dead, because the screen dies after 15 minutes (before it was just flickering). I took care of it. My Asus EEE PC was also dead, but revived through the restore disc. Fuck 'em PC computers.
    Saying that...
My MacBook has big bright strip across the scree, but I suspect my daughter, as she likes to walk on laptops. Anyway, the lead is flexy and it's very easy to damage the LCD on the edge of the keyboard.
Also, the ergonomy of the MacBook unibody is bit shit, as the edges are very sharp. They look nice, but my wrists suffer after about 30 mins... My old iMac freezes when the Flash is involved. My new iMac has some silly warm tint on the bottom of the screen. My Mac Mini was good, though. It would be even better if it had any kind of output to VGA from the Mini-Display Port.

So basically, you're saying all the computers you've owned are flawed in some way?

    Hmm.. what's the common link...

  • I had loads of problems with macs ... powerbook 12" had to go in for repair two times ... MBP 15" just died after two weeks, so I got a black MB as replacement plus refund, which had to go in for repair once. Two weeks ago the battery had to be replaced cuz it died.

Also have a MBP for on-site work, which has an ever depleting battery as well, despite being just 1 1/2 years old.

Apple warranty (not applecare) is terrible, and I buy from John Lewis to compensate that somewhat.

Also keyboards: Three keyboards had the keys coming off and couldn't be repaired so far.

All together a pretty shite record, hardware wise.

Thanks pascalo. Sharing and permissions are open but it hasn't made a difference sadly.

Ah, sudo. It says xxxx/ is a directory which is basically denial. Might be server issues or it might be hangover issue. Will investigate further.
    You is the master.

  • I had loads of problems with macs ...

5+ YO powerbook here, still going strong, though I did rinse the hell out of my student 3 yr apple care

  • I use to buy Macs on eBay and take them into the Apple store for a free fix before selling them again, the good old days... my experience is that Apple will fix pretty much anything if you kick up enough fuss (and have a backlog of products on file). They also guarantee the machine, not the buyer, a neat approach for second hand buyers.

I also used to call them out on the "you must have done this" approach with a swift technical breakdown of why the (often "first release") product had failed due to manufacturing error.

In general Macs last longer than their PC counter parts as the build quality is better, there's some independent test somewhere about it, can't be bothered to look. Never buy the first iteration of a model though and it's possible that Macs nowadays are of inferior quality for some reason or another, but the historical "quality" brand element holds true.

  • I had a Mac Plus and used it for 6 years. It was fucking solid.

But that was when they were good and you actually could be a proper Mac snob not like this massive new wave of mac hipsters. ;)

ps. 90% people who buy computer wants to take it out of the box, plug in and use it to open email, surf the net and watch a movie. That's all.

If that's the case, then why do they spend extra on a Mac (or Vaio)?
Just buy the cheapest thing that will get onto the 'net. Job done.

  • So basically, you're saying all the computers you've owned are flawed in some way?

    I'm not a fanboy.
I'm not a fan of crap either.
Much more crap from the PC world flown my way, to be honest.

  • Poor choices on your part. You should get some help before you next buy. ;)

  • I'm not a fanboy.

    keep telling yourself that.

  • Sorry to derail the Mac Vs PC argument (this will never be solved).

I'm a 'termina'l twat, can someone give me a test snippet so make sure I'm running it correctly?

Because for many people computer is also a piece of furnishing. There's nothing wrong with it.
Like I said, some people buy Vectras and other Jaguars. Some ride carbon frames on Corimas** to work** other buy Apollo from Halfords. It's not Cuba or Iran - extravagance isn't punishable offence.

My computer* is big enough to be a piece of furnishing...

    *VB's fault.

You will please note that people get shit for riding corimas to work.. it's not being punished, it's being mocked.

  • Wicksie ...

    sudo rm -f /path/to/my/file

    can be wildcard:

    sudo rm -f /path/to/my/*.gif

  • be really careful using * wildcard as it will delete everything that's in that location.
if you can move the files to the trash then you can force empty the trash by holding down option key

if you cant move them to trash then

1 open a new terminal window
2 paste this in it without hitting enter **sudo rm -rf **
    3 leave a space after f
4 drag folder or files you want deleted in terminal window
    5 enter

they will not go to trash. they will be gone.

  • Do be careful.

  • Ha, cheers. It's all on a work server so we have back up tapes if I foo bar it.

I'm a little out of my depth here and don't ever use terminal, but the sudo rm -rf isn't working because I'm denied permissions on the fonts that are in the folder. Not sure how to over ride that.
    ffs.

Thanks though guys, it's an education.

  • For sudo you need to have administrators rights on the file system that you're trying to change.
Oh, if it's a remote server you might not have permissions in the first place ... they prevent you from doing that for a reason... Ask the sys admin of your trust.

  • Yep it's a server, but it's only the fonts. I'm sure I have admin rights but will do admin log in.

    Cheers!

  • servers and permissions ... grmpff ...
Thing is that you might be able to execute sudo, but the server is mounted as a network drive etc, and that has different permissions to your local machine.
Everything is more easy if you have sudo to the box directly.
That includes deleting everything and never getting it back.
