The type of bars you choose may affect frame size as well. If you want to use to bullhorns, you'll probably need a smaller frame, I'm 5'10" and have two 53cm bikes with bullhorns and two 57cm with drops.
I think this will be too big and too crap for you, Chris:
For Sale: BSA Tour De France £50
BSA Tour De France
56cm seat tube, 57cm top tube, built for 27" wheels but supplied with an ok condition 700c geared rear wheel and almost useless 700c front wheel,ITM 70mm stem, Trans X Straight bars, cheap brakes, 25.4 seatpost and seat, Cottered Cranks.
BB threading is 26tpi so you'll have trouble finding replacement cranks that will fit.
The chainline is around 45mm, so should be ok if you want to stick a fixed wheel on the back.
Amazing shade of orange, almost fluorescent.
May be good for polo or pub bike.

Thanx for the offer Ben but I think I'm going to try an build up a frame. Bought the Mike Kowal frame from this chap in Bristol. is actually 52 so may be better for my long back and tiny legged freakish frame.

Pretty low on budget now though so will be scouring ebay/classifieds for parts. Probably shouldn't have spanked so much on the frame. Over excited rookie...

I have parts, PUP has parts and Ben has parts. Come scour our garages/sheds/flats.

was really hoping someone would say that.

Indeed. Just let a load go, but always taking more on... Get in touch...

Yep I can vouch for that as well. These two are first class hoarders!!
Although I'm starting to get a collection of bits as well if you list what you need/want I'm sure people can help you out.

Thats the thing. I'm currently on holiday and am spending the whole time reading and trying to figure out what I needs.
The answer seems to be everything + tools.
I have a frame with forks and a headset coming but my girlfriend is also having an operation tomorrow morning on her knee, so will need taking care of for a while. I was thinking that if I'm stuck in the house I can spend some time getting my head around it. Truth is even the BB is confusing the hell out of me.

Tools you can borrow, gets quite expensive buying your own... especially those pieces you only ever end up using a few times.
I've got a spare 15t rear sprocket going if you want it, hardly used. Off my Fuji. Might even consider giving away the drops I got with it too as they're now just sitting in a box doing nowt.

Yah man, I got some new cheapie pedals, a stubbie stem, brake lever, and brake spare that you can have to get ya up and running. The rule is though, once you replace them, then you have to spread the love to someone else local in need. It is always good to meet a new face/ break in some fresh meat! Hahahahahhaha!

Truth is even the BB is confusing the hell out of me.
Honestly the whole bb thing pissed me way off for a while. Just ask loads of questions and tell people what cranks you've bought as wheels generally have a 42mm chain line. I ordered 2 of the wrong size of BB and now they are sitting there doing nothing. Really should have asked more questions.

Oh and for a cheap saddle look for a charge spoon. Seriously the most comfy seat you will ever find at that price.

Amazing! Thanks guys.
I would really appreciate all of the above and will happily pay for any parts offered. This is looking like its going to take me a while. Part of me wishes I had just bought OTP. Learning hurts the meat in my skull.
Need to find some wheels. pricey.
Thanks again guys. Your trip to Hunstanton sounds like it was brutal

Thats reassuring, felt like I failed my cycling proficiency test.

Defo. BB length and taper can be a real shit. Also a lot of us are quite mechanically minded, have tools and for the price of a couple of tins of xxx will help you to build a dream machine no matter what ya wanna go for!

Assuming paying RRP for everything (won't happen, but worst case scenario), how much would a build from scratch cost? Excluding frame and forks and assuming no compromises, but not too bling either (looking at you NJS).
Think filthy aluminium, semi-deep sections, bullhorns. Not vintage, that's not my thing (at least not for my day to day ride).

BB, headsets and chainline all confused me. And hub bearings, all that sort of thing. First time I had a go at working on them, all became clear. That's the way to do it. If you can rope in someone who knows what they're doing, all the better. Plenty of help to be had if you ask for it.

WANTED
Some drop brakes, the ones on my charge have gone shitty. Can pay in beer or cash.
Think machine had some for sale a while back.

I've got a Shimano 105 front brake kicking about. Would need new pads though.

I've been thinking and might stick the bull horns back on my charge, might look odd with black stem silver bars combo though. Mainly thinking about commuting once I live in Norwich, probably won't ride the drops all that much.

I like the Nitto RB-018s I've got on the Steamroller, didn't think I was going to get on with them to start with but they're fine. Would have liked drops for the Dynamo though - could have done with a couple more hand positions.

Yeah horns are great for the city.
Onn another note, has anyone got a Sugino BB for sale? Mine has just failed!
Pop a longer stem on it so your a bit more stretched out might help.
