Helmets & Helmet Suggestions

  • I've seen a few people around town now with a really really simple piss-pot lid. Like a skate helmet but without the bumps around the ears, so it appears to have a flat bottom edge, does that make sense?

I'm interested in this helmet if anyone knows what I'm talking about...

  • Bern

  • Not bern.

I'm fairly well-versed on helmets, I know the shapes of Pro-tec, Bell, Bern and most skate/piss-pot lids. This is not one of those, like I said, the bottom edge of this helmet is flat and it has a very low profile to the head, almost looks like a climbing helmet, but definitely not a climbing helmet.

  • kind of, a bit like this but without the peak.

  • And sturdier looking.

  • Those sort of style I tend to see on people with those chopper motorcycles.

  • Well this did it's job but now I need a new one:

That's a Giro Savant, which I bought because it was about the only one in the shop that fit, I have a big head. But I need more air flow next time around. I very nearly didn't wear a helmet that day because it was so hot. Wouldn't be here if I hadn't though.

What can people recommend for maximum airflow? Around the £100 mark.

I'm obviously now quite keen on Giro, but I also like Met and Kask. At the moment I'm looking at the Giro Ionos and Atmos - I love the Aeon but its a bit too pricey for me.

I haven't seen Kask helmets anywhere, and I don't buy anything without trying it on first. Who stocks them?

  • We can recommend you any kind of helmets but there's a chance you may not like it.

Go to a reputable bicycle shop that have a large range of helmets on display and try them out till you find one that's comfortable.

If the Giro fit you, it's worth trying out the one you mentioned; the Ionos and Atmos.

AFAIK Tokyo Fixed have the Kask helmet too, not sure if Condor do them as well.

  • I just bought a Giro Aeon for £99 a really good helmet.

Black is sold in Large now but they have a few other colours.

  • Catlike Whisper for plenty of airflow.

  • Condor do Kask. I got a mojito there a month or so ago, easily the most comfy I tried on. more comfy than the 160 quid Kask helmet too.

  • ^^and are one of the nicer looking helmets around

  • The second from top Specialized (S2 maybe?) is a really nice lid- it's their old top of the line model with a revised "head lock" fitting system.

First helmet I ever wore that left the front of my head free from sweat when it was roasting- lots of vents.

  • Many thanks for these suggestions. I'm going shopping tomorrow. It'll probably take a while due to the aforementioned big head, shops don't seem keen on stocking the larger sizes.

    • shopping on the hottest day of the year
    • all day in bike shops

has anyone ever had one of these, look good on a bike, i have an old one, these are the new design.

  • Blighty, have you asked at a Giro dealer about getting a new lid under the crash replacement policy? IIRC Giro have a pretty decent one and could make the Aeon affordable.

I binned it in my Specialized, took it to the nearest dealer and was offered any model in the range at 50% discount.

  • I might try that.

    Some details here: http://www.madison.co.uk/giro/

Can't be sending it off to get a new one, what will I wear in the mean time?

    I've been trying on helmets.

A large MET Stradivarius doesn't even fit on my head.
    Giro Atmos looks ridiculous.
There are no large Giro Aeons in the whole of West London.
Giro Ionos is £180 but the Livestrong one is £120 - I may very well end up with one of these if not another Savant. Can't be doing with the Monza at all.

Does anyone know who stocks Mavic helmets? They have them on Evan's website but not in the stores.

I have one of these. Fits well enough, if a touch snug. But I've always been very happy with it. Tried the large Sine Thesis, and the fit was so much better. Could'nt believe it was the same brand.

£200 at my local sports boutique though.

  • i have an Aeon & i got what i payed for.. the vents are absolutely amazing..

  • I know you've all been desperately waiting for closure on this; I got the Giro Ionos Livestrong.

  • Sounds dope.
