+1 for the MXR micro amp.
I quite like the klon thing for its transparency... it’s quite good at not stamping that transistor sound all over your tone, you can use it as a clean boost if you want, it has a clever tone control, it’s quite flexible. There are a couple of really good clones out there, I have a Way Huge Conspiracy Theory but the demos I’ve heard of the MXR Sugar Drive make me want to try that one too (ofc they’re probably nearly identical being from the same stable).

I tried a Klon clone (Wampler Tumnus) and didn’t like it as much as I liked a Timmy. It probably depends a lot on the amp, though - a Timmy (and a Rat) into an AC15 works for me.

I've said it before but the Klone (Arc Effects) i bought off Rickster is the favourite pedal i've ever owned. Weirdly i don't like it as a clean boost (which is how loads of people use them) and prefer it with the gain up at about 2 o clock. Also, people always go on about how transparent they are but i definitely get a mid-forward vibe off it. Nowhere near as pronounced as a TS but it's definitely not flat.

Yeah it changes the tonal balance but there’s something it does that gives it transparency/clarity, maybe it lets a lot of the clean sound through or something. #notascientist

Shelves off high and low and a gentle sloped slight high mod boost would be my guess. And yeah I think it does blend in the effect with the clean signal up to a point on the gain control. That’s something the TS9 also does but far more noticeably.

i guess something to add some mids and bottoms
My dabbling in pedals has shown what others have already said, which is that putting overdrive into an amp that's barely working doesn't sound quite right. There's a tone that you get from actually driving an amp. That said, I've got a TC Electronics Mojomojo, which does a pretty good job of adding a bit of drive and thickness to the tone.

yeah look, i'm not going to be headlining the Budokan anytime soon so really just after something to push me in the general direction of some albeit fakey wakey, ersatz jugga-jaaaaar for my bedroom noodlingz.
that MXR Micro Amp is top of the list so far.
loads of top tips tho.

get a BlackStar 1 watt or 5 watt amp, you can get some great tones at a low volume, and you can regularly find them on the bay at the same price as a good OD pedal

They're all valve, aren't they? That's good advice if so... There's one for sale down the road from me for less than £150!!
Good enough for James Williamson and Bob Mould!!

The HT1R and HT5R are all valve, yep, they do a bunch of solid state and modelled lines, but the HT line are great little amps IMO. Real tubes but also a headphone out with cab modelling.

So @greenhell is gonna have to pony up for an amp and a boost pedal?!? Ha, I'll believe it when I see it...
In other news, I've only just discovered these are about to come out... Cheap too... I'll be buying a black Coronet and a white Crestwood thank you very much!!
Shame about the late-50s-ish headstock, would've much preferred the straight Epi logo that came along right afterwards... But I'm not complaining, finally!!! Three pick-up batwing Crestwood Custom next please, Sir!!

don't ever look at my guitar again.
ever.
Just play with your back to the audience, sorted.

The Coronet looks like a lot of fun.

And in black as well!! There was an original one in Vintage & Rare many years ago with the steel plate headstock that had belonged to Rick Neilsen and had been refinished in black, looked exactly like that one... Can't wait to try one, might need a better pickup and electrics to make it truly sing...

Was just looking at the spec, dunno what the pickup is like but CTS pots and Tusq nut, pretty good at that price.

Think I'll get my pre-order on tomorrow... 🤑

• #9995
They look glorious! I'd almost pony up for a nitro refinish on one just to have it that little bit extra nice!

Just don't send it to that guy in Brisbane!!
Going into Manny's today, will get my pre-order on... ☺️

These Epiphones aren't arriving in Australia until April, I may actually be able to get them cheaper delivered from Anderton's and they'll also arrive next month... I've already looked up the correct headstock decal so will be modding from the word go, will also need to source an era correct two screw truss rod cover... I'll get my guy to fill the screw holes from the bikini logo and apply the decals when he sets the guitars up for me... Been waiting for this day to come for a long time!

Nice little project. How do you feel about the laurel fingerboard? To me the examples in the photos look fine but I always wonder if they choose the darkest examples and maybe some of them will come out looking a bit orange IRL...

NPD for me, intentions are to make some wibbly wobbly textures to bung through a massive reverb and into a sampler.

I picked up a new, second hand guitar yesterday - a 2017 Jackson Kelly KEXT. Neck through body, mahogany top, rosewood fretboard, full binding, TOM bridge. It's very nice.
Bought from someone who's got two new guitars for Xmas and is making space. Barely touched; it's still got its protective film and inspection stickers on.

Moose Electronics Sundrive
I know the chap who makes these and he's an excellent fellow. It also shares its name with the only velodrome in Dublin which surely counts for something around these parts (and you get your choice of colour!)...
