Merry Christmas! Also, happy 25th birthday to my Epiphone Les Paul, since it was a Xmas present. (The Sigma acoustic is a few years older!)

thread approved overdrive pedals / dooverizers?
i'm looking at you, joe.

It's a fucking minefield, Russell...
What are you after? Boost? Overdrive? Distortion? Or fuzz?
What amp is it going through? I generally let the amp do the talking and add boost for a bit more oomph when I need it... Fuzz is fuzz and should be treated as something separate and sacred at all times... It's how you communicate with the multiverse...

fairynuff.
just looking for that sweet sweet Young bros sound as a jumping off point. i guess something to add some mids and bottoms given the rather chimey nature of a hollow body wouldn't go amiss as well. yeah i take your point on fuzz and i don't think it's what i'm after.
it's only going through a wee 20 watt praccy amp at the moment.
yes i get that this is a long and sorry road of trial and mostly error i'm about to set out on.

It’s all about the amp... then a drive pedal can encourage the amp to give you a bit more of something or other.
A Tube Screamer might be a starting point for a more mid-y tone though.

I would say fuck a clean sound, just roll the volume on the guitar back if you want cleans... Tube Screamer is a good shout or a Marshall Guv'nor type thing like a Charlie Brown... If you've got a decent tube amp you won't need a pedal tho'... Something small and Vox or Marshall flavoured will get you to Tone Town, population you... Keep it simple, just like Malc did... Rip out the neck pickup on the W(t)F while you're at it...

might try a good old fashioned ibanez tube screamer for starters and see how i get on. pedal review youtube k-hole is doing my fucking nut
Rip out the neck pickup on the W(t)F while you're at it...
don't ever look at my guitar again.
ever.

don't ever look at my guitar again.
ever.
Ha! Was gonna snarkily suggest you spend every spare moment buffing it to a shine then remembered that I've just cleaned my Jag and it looks bloody lovely now... I love guitars... Maybe a little too much...

What kinda sound are you after? sounds like you’re after some AC/DC style crunch? I don’t have any specific recommendations but would suggest looking at some “Marshall in a box” type things that aim to get you the cranked Marshall sound. Maybe one with two stages so you can chonk out the Malcolm riffs then step on a boost for the Angus widdles.
All that classic ackerdacker stuff is actually quite low gain with all the thump and sag coming from a big amp cranked up to 11 through a big cab. It’s hard to replicate at living room level but a few things claim to have a stab at it.
I’ll do some digging

Tubescreamer might feel a bit anaemic into a clean amp at living room level. They really come alive pushing an already cooking tube amp. Always a good thing to have tho so not a bad shout to start with.

And we're gonna need video clips...

• #9963
nailed it.
yeah having done some reading, seems they eschew pedals / effects entirely for the most part. having a 12 marshalls turned up as far as they can go arrayed behind you is gonna do the job - achieving a similar effect with shonky parctice amp is never really gonna get you close...

• #9964
these are getting some positive reviews... comic sans tho
-
• #9965
What amp did you buy? How loud do you play at home?

The guy is a Trump supporter, fuck him...

• #9967
is he? well fuck that noise.

wee little orange crush for pennies. you'll hate it.
it has a built in dirty channel that sounds serviceable - i'd just like something a bit more scalable.
the clean sound is crystal clear. and it's surprisingly loud on both channels. enough to warrant playing through ear goggles... which i do when her indoors is indoors. which is most days, obvs.

He went on a small businessman anti looter rant after George Floyd was murdered... Fuck him...
-
• #9970
yeah he ain't getting my money.
it helps that "mooer" in my people's language means to beat the shit out of... tho that might make it racisty by association
-
• #9971
this all seems like a bit of a crap shoot. i miss hanging out in guitar shops for hours playing with toys and then not buying anything.
-
• #9972
I would just get a boost pedal, but my sound's always crunchy/dirty anyway so... I really don't dig that 'start with a clean sound thing', I know it makes sense in the modern world but it lacks any real guts... I love to hear those tubes working for a living...
-
• #9973
they do a boost as well. think i might pull the trigger. they ain't exactly spenny.
-
• #9974
I'd recommend the MXR Micro Amp, really brilliant boost/low gain overdrive... Will probably do exactly what you want now I think about it, I had @rickster's for years before he made me give it back... 🥰

Something like a Wampler Plexi Drive Deluxe would seem to fit the bill. Marshall emulation with loads of EQ and shiz and a TS9 stage you can stick in front.
Happy Christmas nerds!
