  • Thanks dude. Looking now.

  • Poly finish repairs can be a bit of a 'mare I have heard... any chance of a pic of the damage?

You'll know all about devaluation from resprays already I'm sure and Squier JV's are no exception... values are up and the hit from a refin would likely be 2x or even 3x the price of the new paint job. It might sound a bit nutty but you could consider rebodying the guitar... a nice lightweight repro body in a cool nitro finish might cost less than a refin and drop in value combined, plus you could get most of your money back out of it at any time. Just a thought, mind.

  • Squier?! It's yer actual Fender JV made by Fujigen, dontchaknow, etc. ;)

Looking again, it's actually not in as bad a place as I thought. Wouldn't have a clue how difficult it is to fix though. Or how expensive. Or how much of a valuation hit it would take.

  • That’s nothing! People do that to new guitars these days and charge extra for it!

  • Relic-ed. :)

It's partly the memory of the ex who dinged it I'd like to erase too, but honestly if it's going to be a fortune and reduce the resale value anyway, I'll leave it as is.

  • In seriousness, @rickster is right - you’ll lose money from respraying a genuine Japanese Squier.

  • I'm gonna leave it as is if that's the case. In fairness, it's highly doubtful I'll ever sell it, but in the unlikely event I need to, it'd be good not to have spent good money on making it less valuable.

  • This discussion prompted me to disappear down a JV Stratocaster rabbit hole and there's a terrific website with all manner of info about what year they were released, the kind of pick-ups, pots, scratch plates, etc. Then there's a section entitled 'Knob comparison' and for some reason I could no longer take the site seriously.

  • I once whacked my guitar with a strap lock in a temper after a bad gig leaving a perfectly round ding in the top. I felt so bad afterwards that I covered it with a band-aid.

  • Changed my mind of the headstock shape on this btw. The offset 3 a site mosrite-looking one is perfect .

  • I must admit I’m beginning to question the sanity and economics of building a partscaster. I’m only 120 quid in on a cheap body and neck so far but paint is gonna be 60, hardware a couple of hundred, pickups and harness up to 300 if I want something decent… I know it’s all good fun but when you can pick up s/h squier for 80 in fully working nick, it does seem insane .

  • Pretty much can be said for the shitty bike we type about and even sometimes ride but when has that ever stopped anyone?

  • It’ll be noticeably better than an £80 used Squier, though.

If you want to cut the price then you can wire it up yourself, and look at the mega-cheap AlNiCo pickups you can find on Amazon for £25 (I put an HSS set in my old Strat, they sound great).

I usually default to buying Creamery pickups (and they’re cheap, for hand-wound boutique pickups), but the Amazon cheapos were a real surprise.

  • Anyone want to buy a Korg Pitchblack - Poly tuner PB-03 before I stick it on eBay?
    £30 posted

  • Yeah I know! Just grumbling. Part of it is that can’t decide whether I’m doing a full on budget build, or springing for high quality parts. I could probably do it for next to nothing, but scavenging crap parts seems silly given that I’ll just end up with a disassembled them reassembled squire. Equally spending USA fender money on bits for a modest partscaster seems counter intuitive. Might just as well buy a great s/h guitar. Guess I need to make a project budget decision and use that to inform purchasing.

  • It makes sense if you have bits kicking around and you cobble something minimal and janky together for next to nothing. Those guitars always seem more fun but buying everything new just seems counter productive and expensive

  • As long as it's unlike anything they already sell that's fine I think. Plus the building process is a great way to fall in love with a guitar - like successfully fixing a car or building a bike.

  • Agreed - think rodan does too - it was my first design but I always doubt my instinct and do a tonne of abortive faffing.

Crushing hard on that noventa tele btw- and wet leg in general (despite the hype)

Duosonic is new to me too - love that.

  • Thanks for your recommendations I just need to organise my time now!

    @almac68

I subscribe to Marty Schwartz for the simple reason that he covers many genres and this broadens my knowledge.

I'll check him out, I need to go beyond 'rocking out in A'

    @RagnarHairybreeks

but need to unlearn so many bad habits

    Exactly this

  • Marty Schwartz alway looks to me like he's about to break down and start sobbing uncontrollably for some reason. Plus he wears a porkpie hat and says "heyyyy guys" and thinks that wearing a porkpie hat as saying "heyyyyy guys" constitutes a personality and brand. I know this because he sells merch featuring the silhouette of himself wearing a porkpie hat and saying "heyyyyy guys". His lessons are okay ish I guess.

For beginner level stuff I highly recommend: https://www.anyonecanplayguitar.co.uk/

    😂

  • Seconded. He's great.

  • Love it. Thank you.

I mostly play blues, and that was an education. Lots of googling required off the back of that.

  • Ok so I think i've finished having the internal debate about the quality of kit i'm going to put on the strat build. My instinct was to buy the best quality bits i can afford but i've reasoned that the body is basically trash, the neck is cheap and cheerful and it'll be my first attempt at finishing, so i'm going to go budget. Not crap, just that i'm not going to order anything new or fancy. I'll trawl ebay and gumtree for parts.

And thanks to whoever "on here" alerted the late and much missed Teenslain/Ts/>>>>> as to my shonky little build, he's just popped up on IG and offered me a Squire CV loaded scratchplate! What a gent!

Gonna order my cans from that Manchester Guitar tech today as well.
