my guitar journey and tuition has arrived at
the world of triads and theory of keys..
clearly I’m asking too many questions around the creation of minor/major chords, chromatic, pentatonic and transposable scales, harmonies, the trinity of tonic, sub-dominant, dominant..
getting forensic now

BEATO!
This stuff fascinates me and I love to see how it's applied to popular music. David Bennett's channel is good at this:

David Bennett is amazing at explaining these things clearly and without bullshit.

Joeslain (bless him) has sent me a load of Strat stuff from Auzzieland and I've just found some klusons on FB Marketplace for a tenner. Been sanding today and am waiting for my paint and laquer to turn up. Geddin!
Oh and I ordered some CBS era headstock decals to go with my bullet-truss rod neck.

Do you have a respirator for spraying the nitro? Be careful, there are some nasty compounds in it, so you need the right kit. If you can smell the lacquer as you’re applying it, then whatever you’re using isn’t enough.

Haven't got anything yet. I'm looking at respirators and making a temporary spray booth with extraction too. Any hot tips for knocking up something on the cheap? I'll be setting it up outside.

I screw the body to a piece of wood I’ve shaped for the job at the neck pocket. Then I use my bike maintenance stand to hold it, while I spray it in the garage with the door open. Photo below.
I’ll be interested to see your spray booth setup. I’m sure you already know, but he really careful about the spec of the extraction fan - if it could cause a spark, it can result in an explosion. Aside from toxicity, nitro is hugely flammable as well. Fun stuff!

I didn’t know that. Fuck this lark!

Maybe I’ll just do it outside and hope for no flies then….

Thanks all. I took a punt on a 2018 Duosonic in red reasoning I could make my money back if it wasn’t for me. I’m glad I did, it suits me far better.
Anyone want to buy an Epiphone Casino Coupe?

That might be ok, nitro gets touch-dry really quickly.

Next you’ll be telling me I can’t smoke while spraying

I never get tired of listening to Tom Bukovac’s homeskoolin’.. thanks to the generous donors asking for lessons that we get them for free..
finger picking style generally is where I want to excel

I kind of want to start from scratch re: fingerstyle.; I've realised I've developed a method where I don't use my index finger. At all. Very weird.

After grappling with chords, finger positions and shapes etc. my early lessons involved arpeggios, where my homework would include fingerstyle practice with the following rules
- P (pulgar) - thumb down on E-A-B strings
- I (induce) - index up on G string only
- M (medio) - middle up on D string only
- A (anilo) - ring up on high E string only
Followed by holding chord positions picking through, switching between C-A chords (easiest) and D-G chords (hardest)
I still do this for warm up / practice most days.

This will have been discussed - forgive me. I'm after an amp for practice - largely with headphones - maybe a little recording. Looking at the following:
-Blackstar Fly 3 Bt - tiny - would get some use as a bt speaker in kitchen but fairly sure i'd be disappointed in tone for practice.
-Blackstar ID Core Beam - an alternative to a Yam THR10
-Blackstar HT 1H - proper valve head with speaker emulated out - best for tone ? nice and compact but only headphones - could ad cab if i want later.
-Yamaha THR 5 / 10 - always seemed like a good option to do everything and sit in the living room looking nice-ish
-Boss Katana - there's a mini one and big one - seem good
Anyone any advice ? -

have you looked at the positive grid spark amp? I'm not in to modelling amps or anything, I like my stuff hella old and crusty with valves preferably but I've been considering one of these for a while, they look pretty good for the price

When I sprayed my body I had a similar set up to @rodan. I didn’t have the bike stand but my bit of wood attached to the neck pocket had a hook and string so I could hang it from the ceiling of my shed.
I vacuumed and dusted as best as I could before spraying and had no extraction except open doors. I think you’ll have to be very unlucky to get any flies stuck to it.
I think the main thing to factor in is the great British weather if you’re spraying outside or in the garage/shed. If it’s raining or about to rain, don’t spray. The humidity can haze up your finish. It’s fixable, but you’ll waste your time and nitro and only wait for the weather to get good again. Be patient! I wasn’t.
But I got there in the end.

That's a stunna. What's going on on with the zebra stripes on the upper horn? Kinda reminds me of...

Having fun fiddling with tuners this morning. The Klusons I bought yesterday came with the wrong bushings. Instead of knurled press-fit ones they came with modern bushings for a bigger (10mm?) hole with a screw thread.
As it happens, I have two complete sets of vintage style bushings here left over from previous tinkerings. Thing is, they both seem to a mil' or so bigger than the holes on my headstock. Again, not a major issue as I can ream out the holes easily enough. Just curious as to what size the holes are supposed to be? I know modern is 10mm, the bushings seem to be around 9mm (a bit more than 5/16ths) and still too big for the holes. Weird.
EDIT. just asked professor google. Yup, standard for "fender vintage" is 11/32” (about 8.75mm)
This poses the problem as to how i might effectively ream out the hole by the approximately .25mm needed to get to a snug-but-not-too-tight fit... my money's on sandpaper round a pencil.

This is important. If the humidity is too high, the nitro will absorb moisture as it passes through the air. This trapped moisture causes a milky bloom in the finish, which can be hard to get rid of.
I use the BBC weather app, which forecasts relative humidity for each hour, as well as keeping a cheap digital hygrometer in the garage, just to make sure. Ideally it should be below 60%. Of course, you can go most of the autumn and winter in this country rarely seeing it go below 80%, in which case the only way to do it is with lots of very thin passes, and hope for the best.

Haha the zebra stripes are reflection from window/blinds.

I have a THR5, the guitarists in my band both have THR10s. Really rate them for low volume tone, and I quite often use mine to plug into Logic and sketch out ideas in the living room, rather than getting settled down at my 'proper' studio setup
me too! Eric Haugen is great. I also really like David Hamburger over at Fretboard Confidential He's a bit niche, focussing on finger style blues, but his theory stuff is really useful
