  • I want to play enough bass to justify a Sandberg :(

  • joe did you get my message about the monkey? this friday after school would be good if you're about? i've got to shoot off to a rehearsal from about 7 but pint and a swap before then would be good if you're able?

and unharmed, i have the tubescreamer here with me. i'm still experimenting with various amounts of foam and spring to get the switch working consistently. it's a fucking nightmare to be honest. i can get it working pefectly, then when i screw the cover back on it (6 screws) it goes down to working maybe 8 out of 10 times... which obvioulsy isn't going to cut it in a live use situation. i've had it apart maybe a dozen times in the last 48 hours. stupid thing.

i will beat it and find the exatly perfect amount of squish and resitence though. i have some new foam here and will let you know when i've got it working perfectly.

    cheers,

    al.

  • oh my my

  • Can't you start your own thread for basses? call it "not good enough to play guitar" or something

  • Can't you start your own thread for basses? call it "not poor enough to work in a guitar shop" or something

    fixied.

  • I thought I'd get a better rise than that!

  • russell what's the matter with you? it's not the bass as an instrument i take issue with (i was/am a bass player) but what's with these ugly, be-pony tailed, muso-tools you keep posting? everyone know basses should look like this:

    proper basses;

    http://www.propellerheads.se/products/refills/reb/index.cfm?fuseaction=get_article&article=instruments

  • hah! i was posting that yanni-a-like up there by way of response to eriks sandberg wanting ways... whats up with the butterfly on his toe?

that asside, i've been down the fender p/j bass road since i first ever picked up a bass and yeah, they're awesome (still have my jbass in the colonies), theres also space in this world for sleightly more weapony(tail) instruments. frankly, i care more about what they sound like and how easy/fun they are to play, my spector euro may look a bit fucking chinstrappy slappity plinky plonk spankyplank to folks that have religiously played fenders since the dawn of time, but it plays like a fucking dream and knocks the spots off most fenders i've played - active emgs and a thru-neck might have something to do with that. then again i love musicmans and they're built like tanks.

  • Who's never wanted to slap some twat with a high slung bass doing slap and jerking his head like some kinda turkey?
Every pub band in the late 80s had one of these pricks, I blamed that level 42 bloke

  • ha! you can only get away with that if you are wearing sky-blue a padded shoulder sports jacket with the sleeves rolled up and a blonde mullet.

  • i do *try *not to be a fendernazi retrogrouch... it's just that to my ears and eyes everything else sounds and looks worse. playability schmayability. unless you plan on playing expensive chords, two handed tapping, slapping and popping (which i definitely don't), there's nothing i can't do on a nicely set up p-bass... preferably with flatwounds though a valve ampeg.

having said that i do like gibson EBs and fender mustangs while we're on shorties. oh and thunderbirds and rickenbackers and i used have a real thing for musicman basses. hollow hofners etc are also very cool of course.

i'm just not a fan of modern "more is better" engineering when it comes to guitars and basses. the quest for endless sustain that produced though-necks and active pickups etc i think is a bit of a fools errand. who said that more sustain was always better? isn't part of the sound of good bass that thuddy thump? a beefed up version of the upright "thunk"? i don't want to hear bass that zzzzings and sustains like a piano and cuts though.

to my (admittedly quite narrow) aesthetic sensibilities, bass should be buried underneath, supporting, anchoring and holding down the bottom end. i don't what it interfering with the other instruments in the mid or even high frequency ranges.

    but that's just me.

i am going to throw this fucking thing though the window soon. stupid stupid stupid fucking design. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  • i agree - more is not neccessarily better - choice of wood materials, build quality and finish are always going to trump all manner of fancy electrical jiggery pokery, however quality elctronic hardware isnt all about sustain - it's about versatility. you can get pretty much any sound you like out of my current plank with a few minor tweaks of the knobs, and the thru neck and body contouring just makes it that much easier to get up the neck on those rare occassions you need to.

fwiw - playing an upright with cheap spots and a decent transducer makes for sustain that lasts hours.

  • fair enough. as i said, my aesthetic sensibilities are insanely blinkered.

    you still have your upright?

slight tangent, but i just stumbled across this (while googling how to fix the switch on my TS9)

  • yeah i draw the line at anything that looks like this:

upright is still in the colonies :( - it's a bugger to get under your chin/on a plane.

  • I'm probably going to be selling a few pedals myself as I'm moving away. Just looked on eBay - the Digitech WH-1 whammy I bought a few years ago for £100 is now going for about 3 times that!

  • unharmed, i'm going to kill something if i spend another minute trying to get this pedal sorted.

the fault is only that the switch occasionally doesn't kick in first time requiring another little tap. as it is, it works first click nine times out of ten but i just can't adjust it to be 100% reliable. the fact that it's being so sensitive to tiny adjustments of the spring/mounting screws makes me think a new microswitch might solve the issue.

gimme a shout if you still want to buy it. i'll knock a tenner off as it is or will fit the new switch (cost of about 50p) for the original price.

EDIT: seems this isn't uncommon. and the switch is still working so... i guess i'll continue fettling.

    what have ya got?

if i come into some money any time soon i'll be looking for a decent analog delay (boss dm-2/carbon copy)

Hey Man. No stress. I'm out of town until tomorrow evening in any case so let me know how you're fettling gets on. I'm in no immediate danger of playing out with it so it's not the end of the world if you can't get it sorted out.

  • Hey dooks, I'll get your pedal to you tomorrow... I bought one of these off Morgasm, it's fucking amazing! Haven't even tried it through a proper amp yet, just been playing it through my Fender Champion 600... Recommended...

And I've fallen in love with my Tokai Les Paul TV again, that thing snarls even with a shitty Tokai P90 in it... < Gonna change this ASAP, do they still make the Antiquity P90?

  • oh my my

Nah not this shit... One of these.

Better bass for the money than Fenders offering.

I'm absolutely in love with this guys bass playing at the moment though.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PnOG67flRA

Such a sick groove to it without being over the top.

  • I have this though and it's the best bass for the money I have ever played. EVER. Cort GB24, cost me about €300 and everyone who has ever heard/ played it has been blown away by it, just got super lucky with a good one!

  • Who makes that pedal Joe? Looks badass.

  • Creation Audio Labs apparently... It's good, need to try it out on a proper rig tho', I'm sure I'm not really doing it justice on this toy amp...

    Fucktones guitar FX...
