I'm worried as to how an evidently very small child has already learned to sort his problems by heartily thumping whatever has irritated him.

I probably would.
This is why I am not a parent.
That and the fact that I can't stand children. -

cat swiping kid is funny! he'll not be doing that again in a hurry....
reminds me of the time I gobbed at someone's rabbit and I was close enough for it to nearly BITE MY NOSE OFF through the bars of the cage! two vertical tooth lines and much pain for the child-me resulted. -

kids do that kind of stuff a lot; they get upset and lash out. The little lad is obviously crying and upset with the cat for some reason and doesn't have the capabilities yet to rationalise the whole thing so swings at his tormentor who then gives him a proper seeing to much to our amusement
The child might learn to be weary of the cat... or murder it and become a serial killer, while his parents think it'll have great youtube kudos

I've asked my mum about this and apparently my brother and I never hit anything as little kids, that came much later. Is it some sort of genetic predisposition, or picked up from the family, or a lack of good parental input? I'm pretty sure it's not necessarily an observed behaviour as the toddler I saw in the supermarket repeatedly calling his mum a 'stupid dickhead' yesterday obviously was...

Young children can often hit things that annoy them. I don't think they learn it from parenting, it's natural to lash out when you're upset.

Kid looks like he was already crying - the cat is well fucked off anyway, judging by it's tail - poor attitude probably - cat probably already gave kid a boxing, so kid gave cat what for - cat retaliated and then got the hell out of dodge before a shit storm came it's way
You know that thing cat's do where one minute they are purring and being all friendly, then they suddenly try and rip your face off? I'm with the kid on this one....

in my household its learned from a very young age that violence towards the cat is far worse than sibling violence

FFS - the sense of humor fail frequency in this thread is off the hook... especially given that it's supposed to be a funny one.
