Does anyone have a retail version, not a "bundle disk" of Snow Leopard 10.6 going free or cheap? Apple says they can ship me one for £20 or that I could just borrow one and that would be fine. I'm not 100% on how all this works, any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

I can just sort you out with a 10.8 USB installer if you want... CDs are so 2000s
10.8 should run on most macs that aren't really old (like Power PC macs).

The person at apple said I had to update without any jumps in operating systems or I'd loose all my stuff. You think it'd be ok to go from 10.5.8 to 10.8? I'd probably have to maim someone if I lost all my stuff.
-

I don't know, I've not updated more than 2 versions at the time.
But in any case, always backup before you upgrade, then there is no issue, I wouldn't even do 10.58 to 10.6 without a backup. In fact you should backup on a regular basis, Apple hardware isn't designed to last much more than the warranty period, you have to expect a serious system failure sooner or later.
Also, it's generally better to do a fresh install, than it is to upgrade an OS.
If it was me, I'd backup my existing machine (using time machine).
Wipe the machine
Install 10.8
Restore what you need from time machine. -

Yeah, i don't trust time machine though. thedutch said he may have a DVD for me. You about on Saturday or Thursday?
-
• #4374
Also, you got any RAM for sale?
-
• #4375
Yeah, I'll be about.
Time machine is fine, I backup and restore 50 machines to it on a regular basis, never had an issue.
But if you are worried, just to a manual backup of your important files.
