Aww, I have an African bum, thanks to my family's genes. Once been described a white lady with a black ass. :S
I will keep an eye on this, as I think I need to know which one to look out for too.

Brooks B17 is quite wide - quite comfy
I thought so, it was perfectly comfortable the first few weeks of riding with one, but once the shape of the saddle changed and after doing a longer ride, I end up feeling the metal frame of the saddle noticably, and have pressure at the end of the saddle due to the leather stretching, it's already uncomfortable
unless there's a sure fire way of keeping the saddle shape the way I like it, that ruled the B17 out, really annoying as I like that saddle.

Ed, I guess you probably did, but you didn't say anything about it, so don't slap me for asking this...
When the saddle changes shape, there's a tensioner nut underneath the nose to re-stretch the leather, keeping the saddle nice and supportive. Were you not using it, or you saying you did re-tension but the saddle still sagged down to the metal anyway?
It's just you're the first Brooks owner I've heard say that.

I don't know if I have a fat arse, it could be slim......but depends who else's its measured against I suppose. I like to think that grand champion sumo wrestlers are an average and very normal size.
However, last week I took my saddle from my Capo 5, back into Evans.....as the chromoly stanchions had bent. The saddle was lopsided, and had suffered metal fatigue. I personally put it down to the current heatwave. It can't be anything else. Am awaiting a replacement, under warranty.
The nice chap at Evans explained to Cannondale on the phone, that I was a rather "large" chap. Poor sod. Should have gone to SpecSavers.

usually it be months, even year before you resorted to tensioning the leather, not weeks!
thing is, there's only so much you can tension it.

Does anyone know of a rule of thumb for the ratio of sit bone width to saddle width?
-
• #90
if you can get two thumbs in, it's big

Before the B17 I had a Swift, and I had a similar problem, the only comfprtable place to sit was right at the back, but then I was sitting on the metal frame (not rails), because it was too narrow. On the B17, it is wide enough that I dont have to sit as far back as the metal frame.
I just tried the B17 on my road bike over the weekend and it worked a treat (I had been using the spoon from my charge plug) now is buying a second B17 lazy? or do I move it between bikes every time I take the road bike out for a spin?

two B17 make it easier to just leave it on your bike, sometime it's quite fiddly to get the position of the saddle just right, which can be a hassle sometime.

Ed, I've had a similar problem with my Ti Swallow, it sags really easily and I've had to tension it multiple times since christmas when I got it. It's annoying because it kind of wrecks the miles wearing it in I've done. After only 2 months or so the metal piece joining the leather at the bottom was touching the rails. I was speaking to a messenger in Manchester who said that the quality control on the hide has gone, and whilst the higher spec saddles used to get the thicker, firmer hide, now there is very little to differentiate between the lower and upper end models in terms of the leather used. It's really annoying.
I've also has a similar experience to Samson in terms of my saddle alignment, I've had to pull my saddle all the way forward to get a comfortable sitting position, I'm right at the end of the rails.
I might pop into my LBS tomorrow and see if they've got one of those measury things, maybe have a go on some of the other saddles.

A couple years ago, Brooks was making at least 40,000 saddle a year, now they're at their peak producing 140,000 saddle.
Perhaps the quality control did go down in attempt to produce as much saddle as possible.
Anyhow, back in topic, went to Condor, ask them about saddle, but also mentioned that my sit bones is more spaced than the average, they highly recommended the Fizik Aliante, they'll lend me one to test it out tomorrow.

waiting for update from Ed
Ah yeah - it's the Aliante, not the Arione they have in the bike shop near our other office, which I thought looked schweet.
I'll see if I can try it on Thurs (haven't been cycling, cos still feeling handbaggy after the pig flu, so that's my first chance).

There's a specialized toupe that are as wide as 155mm, right at your peak.
however it's varies on your position, the more aerodynamic (i.e. lower handlebar) the narrower your sit bones be.
