You sure they didn't offer you the S7 Arm Warmers? I've got the Assos knee warmers & gloves of the same material and they are nice. But a little pricey.

  • This is 2008.

nice but pricey way of cleaning your chain.

  • ^^ Deffo sure, I'm looking at em right now. armProtectors.

  • Yeah thanks.
I didn't want to get into the whole story, but...
...did, they weirdly, don't have stock of L. Offered me assos - they suck big time in comparison. I still want arm warmers. Thought I might try my luck here. :)

I call bullshit. Assos armwarmers are 10x better than Rapha ones.

The Rapha ones are just generic Roubaix fabric warmer with a decal applied - the Assos ones are actually designed and cut much better, plus the ones I have use different fabrics on different parts of the arm, which makes a tonne of difference.

  • I much prefer my assos armwarmers to my rapha ones. ditto kneewarmers. each to their own.
Rapha winter socks are a thing of wonder, however.

DeFeet wooly things are much better than the Rapha winter socks - unfortunately I now have 3 pairs of Raphas and my girlfriend seems to have decided my only pair of DeFeets are now her pair of Defeets :(

  • I got the Prenda winter socks, which caused my girlfriend great amusement when she spotted the "L" and "R" helpfully printed on them.

    Nice socks, toasty warm.

  • You actually need to have it on the right foot?

  • I don't know, I've always followed the instructions, so am unaware what would happen if I put the socks on the wrong feet.

    Zombie Apocalypse, possibly.

The Rapha merino arm warmers are terrific, one of my favourite pieces of Rapha. The regular ones are definitely not as good, although they are a bit warmer when it gets really chilly.

  • I don't have the merino ones, just the normal ones, worn twice, incredibly uncomfortable. I put them in a drawer, then took them out a year later to sell and discovered most of the stitching had come out on of the elastic things — they went straight in the bin.

Assos have done a year already, look brand new still.

With your dodgy feet, I doubt it matters

  • Old man Dammit with his feet of stone

  • I've gone through a ton of rapha stuff and the only product that has really messed up for me are the arm and leg warmers.

  • true that. Oh and the first version of their fancy race shorts, they were rubbish.. everything else has been amazing. Classic bib shorts are probably the best cycling product I've ever owned.

Yeah, the regular ones are too tight at the top and too loose on the forearm (for me, anyway). And the stitching on mine has come undone as well. The merino ones are fantastic though, really comfortable in spring and autumn and even though they're thin they've lasted much better than the regular ones. I wear them for probably half of the year.

I guess you end up with slightly too much material around the area of your little toe, as the toe section is tapered not square.

S'what they do with running socks at least.

  • Nice socks, toasty warm.

I hope so, I just ordered some on this recommendation.

Was out the other Sunday with Rapha Merino socks, Assos Winter + socks and Rapha booties. Still had lumps of ice for feet. It wasn't even that cold.

  • I find that thinner socks and thicker overshoes combo is better than thick socks (or 2x pairs) and thinner overshoes - more air in the shoes = more warmth.

  • Gotcha. I was wondering if the rather cramped conditions were more disruptive than beneficial.

  • DeFeet socks are good, but SmartWool are easily the best.

  • You definitely dont want tight fitting shoes or gloves in the winter.

I cycled home in thick woolen hiking socks squashed into heavily ventilated Northwave aerators last night. It was fecking miserable.

    S'why I'm on this thread.

Are the Rapha winter bib tights warm? anyone?

  • I wear the cross bibs and jersey with a merino base layer in this weather, generally with their tubular scarf thing, my L&R prenda socks and overshoes.

If anything I run slightly too hot wearing that lot, but that can be easily moderated by removing the tubular scarf thing.

Add Rapha Merino hat if you want to China Syndrome at mile 3 of your ride.

they are good for down to -5 for me with leg warmers. Maybe even a bit too thick in the back sine they go pretty high up. They are as long as the cross bibs wich is nice and doesnt fit as crazy tight as the regular ones. The pad went pretty flat from about 5 months of sporadic cold season riding though. Not as good as the regular bib one anyway.

  • I have thermal bibs, thermal leg warmers, thermal knee warmers, thermal tights (running, not bib or padded), non-thermal bibs, and non thermal bib knickers.

I'm thinking this winter my addition will be a quality pair of bib tights, and spotted the Rapha ones at a decent price.

Also I like to be able to have some wiggle room for my toes.

Think I'm going for some of the DHB winter gloves with silk liners >>>>>>>>>>winter glove thread
