  • they are good for down to -5 for me.

I'm thinking down to -15/20C. Which isnt a normal temperature where I am. But its not unusual in the valleys either. The cold air drops off the mountains into the deep valleys, like some vile soup.

    My weird idea.

    Waffa winter tights

    Together with these....

    and these...

    and hopefully these...

  • no, dont

  • seems a bit pointless buying bibtights really if no part of them is exposed, or you aren't really taking advantage of the fabric and fit by plonking stuff on top.

If I were you I would wear normal bibs for the pad and then: as many thermals as you need (1x silk, 1x wool in -15 I imagine), + 3x layer goretex ski pants and those crazy boots.

  • I guess.

The idea is to have that^ as an extreme option. But also to have all the nice items for idividual use too. Definitly use those waterproof knickers autumm/spring off-roading over some bibs.

The real question is whether the comfort is that much better than a thermal bib + leg warmer combo. Or the thermal tight + non-thermal bib combo. Maybe my winter clothes pennys are better spent elsewhere.

  • I'm just guestimating really - my cold weather clothing knowledge is all skiing-based, and what I would want for that when hiking off piste in shitty weather/extreme cold etc.

I've never cycled in anything below -5..

As long as your feet and hands are warm its not as bad as it sounds.

Decided I'm better off using thermal bibs + legwarmers, and saving pennys. Shame they look really nice.

  • Has anyone tried the Rose or GORE (or any) winter bibs with windproof front panelling?

I'm using good old Roubaix fleece bibs when it gets cold but wouldn't mind an excuse to upgrade.

  • Rapha does audax (for charity). Nice, but at 2 grand, a bit pricey.

  • I'd recommend the Waffa Embrocation, smells lovely

  • I have the GORE Power II Thermo jobbies. Are they what you're talking about?

I like the look of those Rose ones, especially at the price point

  • I had my eye on these, the Contest Bibs with windtex but they've not got my size.

Do you notice a difference with windproof panels on the front? Seems like a great idea.

I have some NB running tights with windproof panels. Does work well in terms of giving you a broad comfort zone climate wise. But they are a touch stiff. Maybe the Gore ones are more flexible? My windproof Gore T-shirt is one of best bits of sports gear I own. But again is very stiff.

  • where did you find that novel, humorous website?

  • christ, why is that everywhere today?

    Fucking rreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee x1,000

They're great. Whether you'll notice the difference between them and your current bib shorts I can't really say - they are certainly better, warmer and comfier than the GORE bib tights I bought last year (which are still really good).

They don't feel stiff or anything.

    MCW's

  • I got the Prenda winter socks.

Good call Dammit. I got mine in the post last night. Very nice socks, snug, warm and well designed. Easily the best cycling sock I have had, even compared to Assos Winter +. They are also half the price.

As Ed thought, the L + R is defo due to the socks being cut specifically for either foot.

  • I brought the DeFeet under recommendation off here, work pretty well in keeping the wind at bay, but warmt is not as good as says a decent skiing/trekking socks IMHO.

  • Popped in to the store for the first time today to splurge. The only thing I wanted didn't fit my correctly-proportioned thighs. Disappointed :(
