fuck me the have some hills thereI was talking to some Northerners in that pub in Toulouse and they suggested near Manch too. The area around Leeds seemed good.. Fleet Moss and suchlike during the White Rose Classic. I'd go back there again.

No Garmin? One of the guys on our tour was calling out the gradients as we rode bits. Quite funny to see how far off the signage was. Porte de Aspet was NOT 5k@5% for example.. verified by the 17% descent warning signs we saw on the downhill!!! Lying fuckers!

I reckon some turbo training would be most effective to prepare for these long threshold efforts but maybe not the most inspring way of preparation. On the other one can make it even more effective by building a DIY low oxygen chamber. I think Chris Boardman had a pretty sucessful go at it when he transformed his sons bedroom in preparation for the hour record.

I live in a studio flat. Not sure Mal would approve of me turning it into a hypoxic chamber..
I probably should be stricter with my turbo work. I really need some way to make it more interesting. If I go back to a stricter coached program things might be easier.

If you want to head up North, loads of good hills in the Peak District (Glossop is a great base), or the Yorkshire Dales is great too. Maybe get on this

I usually ride Willesden's in Wembley but they are only over winter and a bit random. They're good for the turbo-haters like me but I'll need to be doing more specific stuff closer to the event.
Actually, fuck it. I can ride everything on a diet of HTFU and beer. Marmotte = piece of piss. :)

HTFU ! Acyually logisitcis would be a piece of piss too. Trains from London to Manchester can be booked from about £8 each way in advance, and they all stop at Macclesfield. The station is about 100yds from the bottom of the Cat and fiddle. Or get a route sheet from the Polka Dot Challenge Sportive, which begins and ends near Macc. Or do a route to include Holme Moss (about as near as you can get to an Alp in the UK).

Train to Macc
100 miles of lovely Peak District hills.
Beers in Macc
Train home in time for last orders at your local.You ain't really cycled until you've gone through a horizontal hailstorm on the C&F.

Looks like the cheap ones are for weekdays.. no good.. need weekends.
EDIT: £47.65 is the cheapest I can get it, leaving Fri 19:00 (I didn't know it only takes 1:40 to Macclesfield) and coming back Sunday 16:55 and then you need a room for Fri and Sat night. So, it's not the cheapest training option but an option nonetheless.

Sat 19th September - London to Macc 06:55 arr 08:41 = £8
Sat 19th September - Macc to London 18:55 arr 21:00 = £15Or if you want to stay over a weekend, me or others of the Manc lot can put you up.
That's why I now get up 1hr before going on a ride. Neck the coffee asap, mooch around, evacuate, mooch around some more, evacuate some more - continue until you reach the desired consistency.
