Which Tyres?

  • Sorry, first reply not the most insightful.
Out of the 3 different brand 32mm tubeless tyres I've run, they come second. Take into account I use Mavic open pro UST rims, and they are buggers to get tyres on.
1 Pirelli Cinturatos, mounted the easiest, no sore thumbs, no swearing, light enough, decent puncture protection, roll pretty quick, about 2500 miles on em.
2 Spesh Roubaix Pros, tight to mount, but not curled up in a corner crying tight, sore thumbs, little heavier than the Pirellis, great puncture protection, roll pretty quick, +2500 miles on em.
3 Panaracer Gravelking slicks, utter fookin bastards to fit, crying/swearing/soreness/defeat, eventually got em on, light, fragile, minimal puncture protection, roll quick, will never buy again, limited miles due to my worries of having to do roadside puncture repairs.
Pirelli, spendy, Spesh less so, get some.

  • Looking for some advice here. Had a pair of 28mm Corsa Controls 1st gen on my bike for over a year and they were great. Never had a puncture (until they were knackered), used on gravel, lasted 8000km+ front and 4000 rear (had to change the rear as I never swapped front/rear).

Got myself a pair of Corsa Control G2.0 and already got more than a few punctures as well a collection of cuts and nicks. What the hell went wrong with Corsas?

Anyway, looking for recommendations for a nice and as-light-as-it's-reasonable winter tire that won't puncture as often. Thinking possibly Michelin Power Endurance (if they're still called Endurance, had Pro4s in the past and they were very good and very resilient) and had a look at Schwalbes, Gravel Kings slicks etc but open to suggestions. 28s only as I'm on rim brakes.

  • I had schwalbe pro one (fast, but got fed up of road tubeless) S-One (Currently G-One speed, fast, big and tough but wears quick) One (excellent tires but they're now the Pro One clincher, One is a cheaper grade tire now) and Michelin Pro4 (Most durable of the bunch but still quite fast, perfect winter tire). Gravelkings wouldn't recommend, super fast for a big slick and great feel but very fragile.

  • I’ve used two sets of Corsa Controls and honestly they’ve been good. One puncture on the new version in 10 months, so fine. But as always YMMV.

You really can’t go wrong with Conti 4 seasons. Not sexy but so many people swear by them for winter riding. IMO I also found gravel kings fragile.

  • Have a look see whether Terravail do the rampart in 700x28. Or Maxxis Refuse.

  • Never had more punctures in a tyre than with gravel kings. I’ll never buy another set. My pals who had them at the same time soon ditched em too. No idea how they’re still so popular considering everywhere you read, people are saying they cut up and puncture like tissue paper

  • I loved my Michelin Power Endurance tyres, rolled well enough and lasted for ages. They've finally given up the ghost after about 8,000km of harsh winter conditions over two winters.

I couldn't find them in stock in 28mm anywhere in the UK though (available on the German websites but Brexit) so I've ordered some Bontrager R3s as a replacement which seem to have universally good reviews.

  • They do have nice road feel and are grippy af tho. I also had a fair share of punctures on mine, but on balance they were OK.

  • nice road feel and are grippy af

I didn't get that impression but it is what everyone says yeah

  • Standard or the tubeless ones?

  • They were probably the standard ones. I wasn't into all that tubeless stuff back then

  • Not that the tubeless were any better, mine seeped sealant for like 20 holes eveytime I topped up, and got a bunch of plugs inserted too.

  • Hmm, yeah i heard about the old ones being puncture magnets, but I thought there was some chat about the new tubeless ready ones being a bit better.. mebbe not

  • Are all 28mm Turbo Cottons the 'Hell of the North' version or is that a separate line? I gather the HOTN has a bit more rubber, which feels like a sensible compromise for British roads.

  • Yeah they are. Light file tread across the top instead of slick too.

I've got the all black Sagan edition 28s genuinely used for 70km that I'd like to swap for 26 TC if anyone is interested?

  • Cool, would make you an offer but I think I'll go for tan sidewalls in the spring. Good first impressions from the 70km? And why the swap?

  • Yeah I really liked them but they're on my race bike and on 21.5 internal rims I'd prefer something slightly narrower and faster, I don't race Roubaix!

  • What sort? I raced GravelKing (insert string of random letters here) 700x50 in Badlands and they were fine.

  • Cinurato Gravel M 650x50

53mm on i25. Actually with some jiggling there's a bit more clearance so when I find a new CL rotor that doesn't cost £80 I'll be running this up front on the Tripster.

The Mezacl 2.1 was 1mm wider and would meet at the sidewall so I was less keen on trying them...

  • The bog standard slick one, 32c, British roads.

  • I think the ones I have are SKS version which may be more durable? Tubeless. I'd still be running them now if I didn't need to put the 700C wheels back on the road bike.

  • Exactly this! Glad I've read the last couple of pages as I thought it was just me. They do feel lovely, but never had so many punctures in such a short space of time. For riding UK roads they are completely useless

  • Are you doing a PHD in this field?
