  • In which case what would you get that has the spec of the Vaio that Adoubletap linked to, for the same price or less?

    • Screen size - 17.3 in
    • Processor - Core i5 - 2.26 GHz
    • RAM - 6 GB
    • Hard Drive - 320 GB
    • Operating System - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
    • Optical Drive - Blu-ray Player / DVD Rewriter
    • Graphics - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470
    • Webcam - Integrated
    • Warranty - 1 year warranty

    For £740

  • Money where mouth is please sir!

  • ok... i'll get back you in a short while, crocodile.

just so you know, i ignore HDD space and gimmicks like webcams, neither a problem to buy a camera or buy a bigger HDD if needed >100GB is plenty.

  • Ok, we'll use those as tiebreakers, focus on the rest of the specification for now.

  • don't bother with lots of hard-drive space.. externals are cheap as chips at the moment

  • I was going to stick a couple of big drives in a NAS box.

  • the Dell Studio 17 immediately stands out as a contender. and the Dell Studio 15 also.

  • I dont think I really like Win 7 :|

    Freeeeak.

  • have to say Win 7 is amazing.

  • It's not awesome but for the price it sounds ok. FUcking white though and you will be laughed at for owning a Vaio. :)

  • Things have changed, the Vaio doesn't seem like a bad deal after all. The extra memory is pointless unless your video editing or editing large photo files and the like. The Dell i pointed to up there is a bit cheaper, slightly smaller screen and comes with a much faster i7, and it's the CPU is what it's all about at the end of the day.

  • "At the end of the day" there are things more important than CPU choice.

  • Chut the puck up.

I suppose your right, everyone's needs are different. For me it's CPU, GFX, MOBO upgradable (only applicable in desktops)and DDR3 and x64 Win7 Pro (or higher)

With a laptop if you need HDMI or firewire for example, you need to make sure you have it on the one you buy.

Screen size also, for me 15.4 is plenty big.

Depends on the person, Dammit will shortly enlighten us im sure.

  • For me, it's all about whether or not the idiot manufacturer has put a Fn key where the Ctrl key should be.

    That affects Murtle particularly.

haha, Lenovo fucked up on that shitstorm, doesn't bother me though, but for devs that need to use it all the time I'm sure it's more that just a little bit annoying.

  • Sorry Dylan, I'm not giving Dell any money, no way no how.

  • I see, go for the Vaio then. It's really not a bad deal at all from my meager googling and looking around it's well speced for the price.

  • Its been nothing but problems since I got it. Vista was nice and safe.

  • Vista is complete shit. What problems?

  • Crashing or lagging when trying to run something media heavy, eg: chatroom, iplayer, Spotify or msn webcam. Laptop isnt hot or anything.
Adobe & shockwave is recently updated.
Often have to find myself doing system restore after windows updates.

(Specs of the laptop are a couple pages back etc)

  • Something seriously wrong there. I've been running Win7 since before release on 3 machines of my own and everyone at work uses it too. No problems.

What's the laptop? Have you got some odd video card installed? What's in your event log after a crash?

Start > Run > type "eventvwr" > hit Enter and nose around looking for error messages to see what it is that is crashing. Uninstall it or check for an update.

  • Using 32 or 64 bit?

There's some info here but no resolutions (I would suggest not using Sleep, Hibernate and other power-saving modes - I never have with my laptops):

Expand the 'Windows Logs' on the left and look in System and Application for any other errors or warnings.
