  • Come to think of it, I have.

And doesn't Macintosh tend to be underspecced in comparison to the alternative? or has that changed?

No that hasnt changed. I picked up my laptop with a I3 processor (quad core) for £430 and a mate picked up a Macbook pro for over a G. Admittedly he got 1GB more RAM but not really worth it. People don't understand you can buy a PC and not have Windows operating system on it....

    Ain't white and lovely. End.

One of my friends bought a mac and derided me for saying I'd rather have a PC. She said Windows was rubbish. I then explained to her the idea of operating systems and that I used Ubuntu. She went on to argue '..but Macs are so pretty'.

  • Well, it's true. And there is the whole issue of life being as it is. I.e. PC's just fick you about 19/12 and everything's a hassle about combating idiots, whereas Macs just work, and you can get on with something less tedious than worrying about pooters.

  • OS 10 are a bit limiting if you want to mess about.

Windows 7 is pretty good, I don't like that.

  • Before I had an iPhone I quite wanted a Mac, post iPhone not so much.

I have never owned a device that crashed or locked up a much as that Apple handset.

iPhones are just utter shite. I am a Macveangelist, but don't and won't have one. However, every epic world changing company is allowed the odd complete balls-out fick-up.

  • That is as may be however the perceived risk is a lot higher with a Mac for me now .

By that I mean to buy the entry level laptop I am looking at £850, for an OS that I believe will be painfully unreliable.

I would rather buy the Vaio linked to earlier and dual boot it with Ubuntu.

    I know that works.

  • I have nothing against windows/PCs but I'd be a bit wary of Vaios, last time I was looking for a laptop there are a hell of a lot of them on ebay being sold for repairs/spares. I didn't follow it up with any research but it might be worth a bit of investigating.

  • ^ I just checked a few auctions and none was less than 5 years old

I think guerillaphoto beaten you to it.

    lol

Well, from the Vox pop survey I did when thinking of getting one, the overriding feedback was it was a Delicious and Wonderous Thing, but as a telephone, it was bobbins. I borrowed one, albeit only for a day, but it was terrible in that respect - far worse than my then Nokia bog standard business 'phone in terms of actually getting a signal and talking to someone. And nothing I've seen since convinces me that they've got a lot better, not that I've tried a new one.

All good then, it was a while ago that I was looking, just something that had stuck in my mind.

  • anything with windows on it, is not future proof. Seriously have you ever met anyone who has used a windows based laptop for more than a year and a half? get a mac for £750 u can get something OKish even the basic macbook I have owned for 4 years outperforms most windows machines and that is only got 2 gig of ram

My HP has the original install of XP on it from when I bought it new in 2006. I still use it.

  • Is there anything out there that come close in terms of price/spec?

    Sounds like a "no"

My iPhone has never crashed. Is it just me? I've played with a few mates' HTCs and, although I wish my iPhone wasn't as sluggish, it's been bloody reliable. [/owner of iPhone 3Gs who updates software as soon as it comes out]

Say what you want about the hardware but OS X is bloody reliable! :) The keyboard on my MBP has gone a couple of times, the battery is fucked and there's a pixel-thin green line running vertically down my screen but OS X has always been good to me. I've taken a few heavy tumbles with it in my bag though so don't let that deter you.

  • OS 4 totally ruined the iPhone (if it's not the new iPhone 4).

Very annoyed as it was running fine and didn't feel the need to upgrade.

Quite like those HTC Desire, pretty good to use despite being a tad more complicated.

  • Thought I'd try the bricks and mortar retail experience on TCR this lunchtime. Have been assured that "only women buy Sony laptops, so try this Samsung"

  • Hah! Where did I put my skirt?

  • ^left it at DJ's house, post role-play fuck-fest

  • My iPhone has never crashed

I've got a photo of a mate's iphone that has crashed after taking a photo of me.

It could sense the evil within..

  • Quite tempted to get that Vaio, to repeat Adoubletap- can anyone point to a better deal on the market at the moment?

  • I dont think I really like Win 7 :|

last time i looked at Vaios they were overpriced, underspeced fashion label kinda thing. look great but actually quite tame under the bonnet. For the money i would want the opposite.
