• I think that it just needs some lube because I might have incidentally removed some when taking chain off. I turned chain other way; It's the same noise, no matter in which position.
    Again thanks for help.

  • Same problem I had with mine. Loosened it off a tad, drowned the thing in lube, wiped off the excess and now it's super quiet.

  • Did you figure it out? I have the same problem from my mid 80 Raleigh Record sprint, on the left crank all the way down.. broke down the bb and rebuilt it, changed the chain, tightened the rear wheel, put a wrench on everything that can be tightened, and then tightened it. The frame is 501(?) and twists when I give it reasonable amounts of torque. i am running a 52/15 ratio as well, but i think the noise is coming from the alloy chain ring, any advice would be welcome

  • I have a noise problem from my mid 80's Raleigh Record sprint. When the left crank is all the way down or if you can imagine the arc from the bottom quarter of a circle; anywhere in there on the left, and obviously anywhere on the top quarter of the right. I broke down the bb and rebuilt it, changed the chain, tightened the rear wheel, put a wrench on everything that can be tightened, and then tightened it. The frame is 501(?) and twists when I give it reasonable amounts of torque. I am running a 52 (original chainring without the inner chainring attached)/15 ratio as well, but i think the noise is coming from the alloy chain ring, any advice would be welcome as the noise is worrying and it almost feels as if i am torquing something, feels as though there is some flex somewhere. Thanks. and Yes, I have read some other threads, but nothing seems to work.

  • hmmm i've had similar problems but always been something different to what i thought it was - regreasing pedals may work? or try different pedals. i assume when you tightened you also greased? or tighten crank bolts? or chain ring bolts?

  • Yeah, my next thing to do was check the pedals, its driving me insane, and the chainring is attached to the crank arm by screwing into the bottom of the crank near the axle so no chainring bolts. i may even go so far as a new crank set... well new/used but still. the whole thing feels a bit week. thanks though, i am off to fiddle with the pedals

  • nope, not the pedals, and tightened the cranks again....
    still stuck, help

  • Could be a hairline crack somewhere in the frame that's opening when you apply power?

  • that... that would suck... best start looking for it i guess. if thats the case , I am going to have words with the man I got this from...

  • try taking off the crank arm and getting a tooth brush or similar (with degreaser) on the taper and the point of contact could just be a bit of dirty separating the arm and taper, leaving a orrible noise...

stupid i know, but check saddle too mine made a noise for ages.

  • Any thoughts on this much appreciated.

About 2 weeks ago, quite out of the blue, i set off on my bike and noticed that, when i stood sup on the pedals, there was a distinct clicking noise, once per revolution. The sound reverberates around the steel frame, as they tend to.
It seems to be when i put weight on the left pedal/crank, when it comes up to a 3/4 rear position, when it's around the same area as the chainstay.

i've tried a few things - I rebuilt the eggbeater pedals, as it needed doing, no joy.
ive serviced the drive chain - something i do regularly anyway.

i've even tightened and cleaned the saddle/seatpost, since these clicky noises often seem to come from there, even it it seems unlikely.

but the noise is still there. Could it be the BB? i've had the bike nearly 2 years, does it need servicing?
i don't know anything about BBs, really, so wouldn't know where to start.

  • Have you removed, greased and rrefitted the BB, checking for wear at the same time?

Park Tools website for instructions: http://www.parktool.com/repair/bikemap.asp

(or bring it to Wests and Murt will kick it until it's quiet)

  • @hippy, WhoTF is that^^^^ ???

  • (or bring it to Wests and Murt will kick it until it's quiet)

But if there is anything wrong then Nimhbus won't be able to understand Murts' mumbly explanation. He's been gone from Wests too long, either you or I will have to translate.

  • fnck it, just bring it!!

  • Maybe come down to west drinks, we always welcome newcomers...

    :)

  • Have you removed, greased and rrefitted the BB, checking for wear at the same time?

well, no - you think that's a likely cause?

i'll have to get BB tools, it'll probably get messy!

  • It's lowest thing to the ground so gets the most crap thrown at it and you've looked at most other likely causes..

  • if you do anything, it'll probably get messy

  • If you don't end up removing/cleaning/regreasing the BB, spray some WD40 in there. Quietened mine down a treat.

  • wear an ipod

  • When did you last clean it? 90%* of annoying clicks mysteriously disappear when you wash your bike.

*75% of statistics are made up on the spot.

  • Andy - i clean it regularly, and have cleaned it all again in the hope of the click mysteriously disappearing, but no joy.

Brett - i like the WD40 idea, much more up my street!

  • probably BB cup slightly loose on non-drive. change to higher tempretures recently does it, expansion etc

  • good answer.

btw, what if i was to get a new BB at some point, what fits with sugino 75 in a condor frame?
